Are you talking about the sprite/color processing? I believe it's a 4-bit.

They did release a couple of 8-bit Atari computers though.

Atari 2600 was 128 bits.

No, its main cpu was a 6507, which handled 8bit data. It had 128 bytes of RAM.

Yup, another 8-bit vote, mine is with confidence as well. Bits do not mean everything with graphics goodness, so that's why you aren't getting NES quality graphics.
