Cool GBC mods

Post by CronoTriggerfan »

This kid at school is paying me to mod his GBC. He said he doesn't care how/what, he just wants it "better". Do you guys know any cool GBC mods that are relativley cheap, as in under $10?

A nice paint job maybe and even a case mod. Or a led backlight.
Meh... So I don't post much?

If the case is clear, then putting LED's on the inside so it glows would be nifty, or if its opaque then maybe you could drill tiny holes in the sides and put them there. I like LED's to much. Maybe you could install a really tiny fm tuner on the inside, it might work but it would be a tight fit.

Well if he's expecting it to have better graphics, he's misstaken. And as we've discussed before, the GBC screen cannot be backlit. It will lose all its color unless the light is passing through it from the front and then gets reflected back the other way.

Things you could do:

1. Add LEDs to the inside to make it glow
2. Paint the case. Maybe with that chameleon paint (the stuff that shifts colors when you look at it at different angles.)
3. Get another GBC and swap half the case parts for a two-tone effect
4. overclock it. (use a SPDT switch to toggle between normal and overclocked.
5. Depending on how bad the screen is scratched up, use some car polishing compound to remove scratches. (I use Meguiar's Scratch X on my watch, GBC, CDs... it works well.)

add some turbo buttons
put some rubber gripping on the sides
Get an old shock and rock, and build it in (might be a hair more than ten dollars)

Just try some case mods. Maybe backlight it, overclock it, and give it an awesome paint job.

just to let you know, you can't light the screen without a worm-light thing above the screen. i've tried to light mine for a while and you can't backlight it because the screen gets all washed out and you can't front light it without something really sticking out because it only reflects light coming from almost directly above it :( you could make the case glow though :P

did you try using cloudy leds?
kinda like theyare sanded down, spreds the light around instead of focusing it in a particular spot...

Hows about "down grading" the GBC?

Put in in the old enourmous gameboy case ( and this way you have room for more complicated mods...)
Then mod a case that really needs it

Build an external controller for it, like by connecting the wires to the button pads on the pcb.

If you put LEDs in it, make them turn on when you press any button.

Put them around the sides of the case and use a microcontroller to flash them in a sequence. :P
I'd imagine right now you wish you were a cuttlefish...
