apparently taking the case off of a n64 stops it from workin

Well, I tested two n64s to see if they worked then took off their cases and they didn't work. The power LED came on at first, but then it didn't. On either. What gives?

Did you touch any of the boards? Did you do it on Carpet? Did you do it when the Humidity was high?

I tried on carpet, it didn't work, I turned it off, moved it to my lap, it didn't work, I MIGHT have touched the boards by accident, but what the heck would that do?

Well, ok, I will keep that in mind 7 years from now (exageration) when I get another n64! Gah! That is screwed up! I put an n64 on carpet for years and played it, but when I take off the freaking case! GAH! I am pissed now. I was pissed before. Now I am committing murder.

yeah when its in the case its sheilded pretty well.

the led blinks and then goes out? or it used to come on and now it dosent?

i find it surprising that both would have been fried like that. i took apart an entire pentium 3 computer, spread it out on mar carpet, and then put it back together, after accidentaly stepping on the ram. of course, the carpet in here is that hard, not very hairy kind. and i wouldnt say that today is particularly humid.

and im always careful to touch the boards by their edges.

anyways. put them away for a while, then one day, go put them back together proerly, with a jumper pack in correctly, and see if they work.

Actually, you could still semi-portablize it by Friday and just hope that it is sleeping and not dead. If you portablize it while its sleeping, do you think it would freak out when it woke up?

"AHH! Oh no! Where is my HUGE power supply and annoying power cord! What is THAT?! Are those.....BATTERIES?! I HAVE BEEN VIOLATED!!"

If you're concerned about your board not working, it may simply be a short somewhere. Were you handling water before you messed with it?

Circuit boards sometimes may collect water near the traces of its himid outside or if you handled it with damp hands (mind they don't have to be soaking; a small amount of moisture can do the trick sometimes).

If so, try this: bake it. Isolate the board and put it on something made of porcelin and stick it in your oven. Then set the temperature to around 165 degrees. Leave it in there for about 4 minutes; no more! Take it out quickly and put it in a place where it can cool. Putting it in a fridge is plain dumb, since fridges have moisture which equals bad. Just lay it in a cool dark place away from any water source for about 10 minutes. Make sure that you inspect the plastic on top of the chips to make sure nothing has melted, because that means 1. you left it in for too long or 2. you set the temperature too high.

This is a last resort mind you, so only do this unless nothing else works.

I have had mine out of the case for a few months total and never use my antistatic wristband, and it works fine. I keep the shielding on most of the time, so that could help.
