Well, I can't comment on the Sony, but my mom has that same Toshiba laptop and it is incredible. And of course, I'm sitting here with my Dell Inspiron B120

while SHE has possibly one of the best laptops out there. Sony makes some pretty sweet PCs though, so I wouldn't count it out. However, I can personally recommend the Toshiba and say this: IT'S FREAKIN' 1337 TOSHIBA ROXORS the BIG ONE111!!! Sorry, just had to pull a little Billy

My Inspiron 5160 blows both out of the water. I would look into an Alienware, Falcon Northwest, hey, maybe even a Mac?

Well yes, but he only gave us those options

I made a super-laptop from Alienware, and it cost like $6000.00

I didnt buy it, but man, that would've been hot!

i'm mostly going to use it for school and i chose these two b/c i don't want to spend too much (only 14). and i will definatly not buy a Mac- they suck

alienware makes you pay a premium because of brand name, plus Dell bought them so i lose all respect for them on account of the fact that i hate dell.

out of those i would go for the toshiba, but if you can hold off until november vista will completely up the minimum specs and it would be a wise decision

The processor selection could be better. I would seriously check out one of there higher end (>$1000) base laptops. Oh and Macs are good, they don't crash.

I did just fine on my old Toshiba Tecra. (Pentium 233 MMX, 64 MB RAM, DSL 1.0, AbiWord):P

Now I'm on a Sattelite Pro something-or-other (650mhz P3, 300-some-odd megs RAM, XP Pro SP1, VLC Media Player)

But I'm assuming you will want something top-of-the-line or at least not baseline for games or whatever? Don't bother. Laptops (except for really expensive ones) pretty much suck for playing games.

If you want something fast and stable, buy a used PowerBook. "but omg macs suk because there not windows adn they suck so bad there so slow!" Bull. AMD processors run at roughly the same clock speeds as PowerPC and the new Mac Intel processors do.

Yes, the new Intel line of MacBooks run Windows. There was a thread on it a while ago. Its called "Boot Camp". Look on Apple's site.
