I'm sure you could use a different controller, all you need to do is find out what goes where from the sensors and add some pushbuttons or what have you.

To use a Genesis controller you're probably gonna need a controller decoder. Chad Gray had one for his Supergun stuff, but his site has been dead for years. At home I think I have the pages cached.

BTW, good work, Ben! I'm glad to hear you at least got some working. Try Streets of Rage if you have a chance. It has Bare Knuckle in it too, so if that works as the USA version, we'll know what the deal is. I'm wondering if the problems you're having with compatibility isn't something to do with the region settings.

hmm... If I remember right, the Genesis 3 had a similar compatability list.

i seem to remember hearing that there was only one game that didnt work with the gen3

Based on what I see on my unit, using a different controller should present no significant dificulty. There are 10 connections for the supplied controler, one of those is RESET. It should be trivial to put the reset button somewhere else and solder the nine pins of any genesis controler to the board. I'd even go so far as to be that the pins can just be soldered in order, from left to right, onto the board. If no one else is working on it I'll try to get around to testing another 3 button controller by wednesday. If that works then a 6 button should work just as easily.

As for adding a second controler, well, I was looking at that for a while but I never really had the time to really sort it out. I'm going to go out on a limb and give 3/1 odds that it isn't possible though.

eazyr to just leave the controler right one the unit and put a screen on it.. but i still see no use for a second controler pot so thats not going in there... cartrage slot and battrys ok so not a lot needs go on there!

I'm going to be kiling an already ailing Mk1 for my edge connector, the video's gone all green on it (eeew!)... anyone from the UK know where I can buy some desoldering braid or a desoldering pump (B&Q etc. ?) so I can get the edge connector off without resorting to brute force vs. ignorance.

Odds are you can buy the edge connector for about the same price as the desoldering braid. It's a fairly typical 64-pin dealie. If the video has gone green on it, you might want to check for loose connections or the like inside. Maybe red got disconnected somehow. In short, let's keep the destruction of video game consoles to a minimum here

Oh yeah, about the compatibility issues- could it be possible that some ROMs are more picky about the +5v than others? Maybe the games Ben is saying aren't compatible are when you give it another AA? Just a thought. Then again, I hear Sonic 3 is sometimes less compatible than Sonic 3 & Knuckles for some reason in some of the Genesis consoles.

Nope, we used to have something similar called Tandy (I think you used to have those too) however they're only good for radio controlled cars & mobile phones now (in fact I'm not sure but they may have even gone bust!)

The UK sucks for this sort of stuff, I nearly always have to drive miles out of my way (the nearest place I know of is 30miles away in the centre of Manchester & there's NO WAY I'm driving into Manchester city centre 4 days before XMAS!) or buying stuff online which takes too long. I'm guesing B&Q warehouse (think Home Depot) probably have stuff like this though, looks like I'll have to wander around there for a while.

I have several Mk1 Mega-Drives (in various states of disrepair) all over the house, most of them aren't suitable for sale as they have generally had a hard life in the past (got most of them as part of several "job-lots" on e-bay etc.). For example the last one I got looked like someone had poured a can of Pepsi/Coca-Cola down the cart slot and let it dry, mmmm sticky! Took hours to clean that up to the point where it was useable (surprisingly it's one of the more reliable Mk1's I've got, it's currently connected to my Mk1 Mega-CD!), several others have been declared D.O.A./Beyond reasonable repair in the past and thrown away, so one less Mk1 won't make any difference in the grand scheme of things. MkII's on the other hand are surprisingly rare here in the UK so I wouldn't recommend hacking one of those for parts unless it really was dead

mk II are the cheapest ones by me I have about 9 us and 1 pal I agree the pal ones are hard to find mine cost $40

Just walked around the corner to my local Argos (here in the UK) and they had the Radica Gensis in stock and on sale for £14.99 - Result Now where'd I put my soldering iron mwhahaha!
