LED Mod Works, Screen Doesn't

If you're making a portable you probably need something to watch it on. (Unless you want to guess what's happening in the game, but I wouldn't advise that) Anyway, this forum is your "Hacking a pocket TV/screen" one-stop solution. Share your experiences and knowledge here.

LED Mod Works, Screen Doesn't

Post by XFactor »

I tried asking this before on another thread and it wasn't answered.

My LED mod on my screen works. I have tested it and it works flawlessly. My problem is that i can't seem to get the actual LCD to work.

I have wired the connections for the screen per Nieldo's diagram. I know for a fact that the positive and negative connections and correct since the LED mod turns on when i flick the power switch; however, it is the other connections that are giving me pain.

What i did was i took the socket which originally was connected to the original power board, cut off the other end of the socket (which was attached to the AV jack board), stripped the appropriate wires, and connected the corresponding wires leading from the N64 to the screen via solder.

I have triple checked my work, and whenever i turn on the screen, all i see is black. The screen powers up and then goes black. This is the only result i have gotten. I thought it might be a problem solely with the video, so i plugged in the speakers. They don't work as well; it seems like there is power going to the screen but it is recieving no input from the N64. This was confirmed when i turned the N64 on and off while the screen was connected; usually you will see a flicker if even a minute connection exists, but i saw no indication of this.

I directly soldered the socket wires from the screen to their approriate pins on the video port of the N64 (like in the diagram). I made these connections on the underside of the board because the plastic video plug is on top (obviously) and i didn't want to mess with removing it just yet.

I have been trying to figure this out for days, but to no avail. Can someone please help me here...After this i have nothing else but casebuilding bliss :)

Did you try inputting 5V from the 7805 to pin 12? (check out the sticky)

I just tried it. No luck. The screen did the same thing as before, with no result. It powers up and then goes black. Could there be something wrong with my video connections? Can you show me specifically which sticky you used to make your own connections? I am sorry but this is confusing as hell for me.

I have a question though: When i originally wired the screen for power, the ground from the N64 seemed to lack enough power to even turn on the LED mod. So i directly wired the ground (which goes into the socket pin) to the ground coming from the battery instead of wiring it to the ground pin on the video slot on the N64. Does this have any adverse effects or should it not matter?

EDIT: Do you mean the 7805 on the N64 or the 7805 on the PSone screen?

I believe he meant the 7805 on the PSone screen to the 12th pin on the PSone screen board. Also, does the screens controls work? Such as the volume and brightness buttons. If it does, then it is solely just a problem with the N64 wiring. Otherwise, there could be something wrong with your screen and/or amount of power into the lcd screen.

The speakers do not work along with the screen, so i can't test volume.

Should i just solder the wires directly to the pins instead of using the sockets? Is it better to use the sockets than directly soldering them? Can anyone show me a picture of their screen that works sucessfully with the wiring visible?

There are a couple fuses on the power in and ground lines, maybe one of them is malfunctioning.

Just an update...

Some told me to test the volume and brightness controls on the screen to see if the bars appeared. I tried them; they work! I can see both of them very clearly.

What does this mean now? What should i do because i am looking at two options:

1.) Destroy the socket connectors with a blow torch and directly solder the video and sound inputs to the appropriate pins.
2.) Find the RGB points on the back of the screen and do the same thing.

Could it be that i damaged the plastic connectors when i unplugged them to do the LED mod? That's why i am considering direct soldering. They look fine but you never know...

Hmm... I could have sworn there was one (it only makes sense) but I just checked and there isn't, the ground line goes straight to all the components with no fuse in-line. Sorry about that.

That was what I meant for you to test earlier :P So yeah, your screen is fine...I suggest you check the grounds and make sure they are connected tightly. Also, test the power coming from the N64 with a multimeter.

Minkster, got a question...

I saw that the screen wasn't recieveing enough power from the ground point on the N64 video port, so i decided to run the screen directly off of the main battery line (main ground, which all the N64 grounds are tied too). Right now, that ground on the video port is not wired to anything because i removed it thinking it wasn't nessecary. What should i do with this ground and could it be the reason behind my screen not working?
