Need stuff for LInux

Post by blackbox_dev »

Ok, so I recently installed Fedora Core on my Dell Latitude C840 laptop, and now I want to put it to work. I need the following things, and with the exception of the PCMCIA card of course, it needs to be free.

#1 - PCMCIA Video Capture Card - Needs to be able to capture NTSC video at full 29.97 FPS at DVD quality. Will spend up to $100, more if it is needed.

#2 - Video editing software - Something like Windows Movie Maker, except for Linux.

#3 - Video Decompiler - not sure if that is the right term for it, but basically I need a program that can decompile all the frames out of my captured video file, so I can modify them, and then put it back together. I'm assuming it would also need to rip the audio track out as well, but it could be a seperate program for that.

#4 - 3D Modelling software - this one is non-video related. You know, stuff like 3DS Max. Basically I want to make designs for my portable in 3D.

Thnxz0r!

Anim8or (www.anim8or.com) reportedly works quite well under WINE. It has a built-in renderer which is pretty good and can save to .3ds. It also runs under Windows :)
It's what I make all my game models with.

You could probably run Anim8or with VMWare Player + HackADay's tutorial for making an image.

Cool! Does anyone know stuff about the capture card, or is that just a stupid idea?

#2- Cinerella: http://heroinewarrior.com/cinelerra.php3

#3 - Most video encoders under Linux can do this, I know mencoder (included with mplayer) can.

#4 - POVRay + frontend, you can do it all in POVRay, but it's quite hard to work with, or there is CAD software (which might be better for what you're wanting to do).

For a simple user friendly video editor I have had pretty good luck with avidemux2(linear) and Kino(non-linear). I haven't done any serious editing just simple cut and pasting of scenes.

The only PCMCIA capture card that I have heard works well is the IBM Smart Capture. I haven't been able to find much info on the card, I can't even find one for sale.

You may be better off finding a USB solution. Check the Hardware Compatiblility List to find one that is supported.
