MAME in its own right is legal. The game files you have to get to do anything with it aren't.
Get a MVS, load it up with stuff like Metal Slug, League Bowling, and Neo Turf Masters. Or get something like the Namco cabinets which had several different games on them.

Yes mame is legal altho using mame even with a free rom thats legal to get money isn't legal.bicostp wrote:MAME in its own right is legal. The game files you have to get to do anything with it aren't.
The Mame Dev Team built it to preserve and as stated in the terms and conditins of using the software it can't be used for commercial use.
Altho there are quite a lot of people who do that and just buy dead gameboards for $10 and say its legal which in theory it is as he has the orignal game board and is just using the game through a diff media altho they will still be using mame so that parts illegal
Ok thats enough mumbo jumbo

Sorry dude. The law does not work that way. You must actually make a backup from your own copy. That is why most people with emulators and roms cannot even say that they legally own tht rom images. They have rom images from someone elses rom, not their own.NiN^_^NiN wrote:Altho there are quite a lot of people who do that and just buy dead gameboards for $10 and say its legal which in theory it is as he has the orignal game board and is just using the game through a diff media altho they will still be using mame so that parts illegal
The DMCA law (I think that is the proper acronym) clearly states that a backup copy can be made when the original media is no longer feasibly acquired. This is why the MAME community (at least some devvers) wait a couple years until they begin work on emulating arcade hits. It can then be argued that it is a lot harder to get the hardware (and keep it running, I imagine some arcade machines are pretty stupid about parts) and therefore they should be emulated.
This is also why it is illegal to have roms that you did not personally back up. It must be from your own media. So having dead media is the equivalent of me finding a complete set of Beetles cds in a trash can, but all cruched to pieces, and then saying I have legal rights to download the songs. It just can't happen.
[/end rant]
To clearify something the DMCA is an act that does two things. One it nearly destroys fair use, and two it makes it nearly impossible for you to make getting roms legal.
Technicly carts can still be considered in use and so coping the rom is illegal. Not to mention if there is copy protection cracking it, you'll get slapped with 1202 of the DMCA and that is breaking copyprotection.
I'd say stay legal, but in you're own home who cares Clinton was an idiot to put that through.

I am a geek.
Actually the roms on arcade boards aren't unique to the chip and can't be traced if it was from that chip or not.
And when i said dead boards i mean where it has video problems etc.
How do u think people can legally sell replacement roms on chips for your old board? they send in there chip and get sent a new one.
This is so far legal from all standpoints even from the few arcade companies that have commented on it.
Altho it's never been tested to be unlawful.
But when u get a rom thats got encryption thats another story

After some time had passed and some amount of public outcry, the restrictions enacted by the DMCA were relaxed as they pertained to video games that had become obsolete (for more information, go to www.copyright.gov/1201/). These relaxed interpretations of the DMCA appear to allow the techniques used in emulators because the video games appear to fit the definition of obsolete as described in the previous reference. The exact impact upon the emulation community is not precisely known, but it is clear that this is an area of copyright law that is in flux and will be subject to analysis and change for some time to come.

Thank you very much, guys. My dad and I are looking for a Neo Geo or something with JAMMA now. It looks like it'll be a better deal all the way. I can officially say now that after a day or two of researching, I know WAY more about arcade machines than I ever thought I cared to know. (Besides, if he gets something that needs boards to be switched out, it gives me a great excuse to work on them/tear them up/learn about the guts of an arcade machine!)
Also, it seems that there are plenty of MVS carts on eBay for like $20 or more. Assuming we get an arcade machine for ~$600 (gotta get a good looking one - not the poor abused machines you see for cheap), we can easily afford buying all sorts of carts to go with it. This will be fun, and I'll keep you posted on what we get.
Also, if you guys are willing, feel free to use this thread to post any good finds for arcade machines, boards, or carts!
