Perhaps I am wrong of course and will end up burning them out, but I did try the listed voltage and it was so dim that there was barely any light emitting at all. By the way, the LED's are 8000 mcd with a 40 degree viewing angle, which unless I am wrong, is quite a bit of lumen output for an LED. The light emitting with the suggested voltage was about the same strength as a flashlight with batteries just about to die out.

Another reason why I decided 3.3 volts was that almost every other website with LED's listed 3.3 volts as the forward voltage. It just seemed too much of a coincidence to me that the suggested voltage was a volt lower and my LED's were much too dim to light anything.

Of course, you are much more experienced than me in the matters, since this is my first LED mod. Perhaps you are correct, but I guess I'll just wait and find out.

Using 6 LEDs worked great for me, but I suggest you order from this place instead of the automotive site I got mine from. Shipping takes longer, but they are cheaper and brighter. You might want to put in a pot to make the backlight brightness adjustable too, just in case the extra brightness of these LEDs is too much. I got the 10 frosted ones, but more might be better (since these LEDs are VERY nice). I used a few to upgrade my mini-Maglites to LED flashlights, and although not running at full brightness, they are pretty bright still.

The whole cost came to something around $10, including shipping charges. Very nice, considering the cost of the LEDs from the automotive company cost $15 for LESS LEDs and lower brightness.

Hey, anotherperson, I got the LEDs yesterday. They are pretty bright(one can light my whole room at night dimmly). I haven't had time to put them in the screen though. I should have time in a couple days.

Should LEDs get hot? I tested mine with 3v and they stayed cool, but with the 3.3v that they are rated for, they got slightly warm after 15-30 minutes.

I was going to use a resistor on the 5v line, but I think I will use the 3.3v. If they lose life, who's going to play 100,000 hrs on a portable anyways?
