Overclocking SNES
after reading the hacking the fx chip thread, i was wondering if the snes motherboard had some sort or ceramic or crystal in it. I began looking all over at the different parts and found something that when replaced it way increase the speed of the snes, not just the game cart. This is on the mini version of the snes by the way. sorry i don't have pics but all my batteries for my digital camera are dead. im not sure what the part actually is because i could not fund it anywhere on the internet. but it is on the larger of the two halfs and is the only blue peice on that half. on the piece is printed "CSA 24.57MX" then some weird symbol that mayber looks like a key and the there is a larger V. it is only two pins and i located among all the different chips. i wan wondereing if anyone knew anymore about this piece. i know that the snes runs a lot slower than 24.57mhz but this is the same thing as with the superfx chip. suggestions anyone???
Well to help you out I did a quick google search and didn't find anything helpful. The best idea would be to thumb through Epicenter's site, Epicgaming.us.

I think there are two crystals on the older SNES mobo. One is 21.4MHz and the other is 3.57MHz (NTSC signal generation.) The SNES's 65c816 cpu is conveniently clocked at the exact speed needed to generate a NTSC video signal, and I think if you replaced this oscillator it might ruin the video generation. I could be wrong though.
However, with the newer SNES, Nintendo basically crammed all the chips, memory etc into one big FPGA and that runs at 24.57MHz. You could try overclocking that but I don't really know what would happen.
If you see a crystal, try replacing it with one a few MHz faster and see what happens. You will probably not fry anything, but don't try anything stupid.
Experimenting is the fun part

What would be the point of overclocking it, nothing was really that slow on the snes to begin with, and keep in mind the faster it runs the more power it will consume (think of speedstep technology for laptops, similar concept)
also you may end up cooking something or possibly frying something by monkeying around with its clock speeds.
just a warning thats all, its cool to think about but it ruins gameplay at superfast speeds, unless of course you need to run over long terrain
