I got my Snesp running off of batteries..sorta

Post by minkster »

Today I wired everything up and hooked it up to my battery. And low and behold it worked...sorta. When it turned on, the colors were messed up, washed out, and faint, and I didn't have any sound working. It sounds either like a ground or power problem. Has anyone experienced this problem before?

The battery I'm using is a 9.6v RC battery 1600mAh. Oh and I didn't do the LED mod on this screen yet either.

I may post pics if my camera phone takes descent shots.

are you using a psone screen or a TV? if you're powering a psone screen with 9.6v that's probably the reason

I'm using a PSone screen. Should I end up buying a 7.2v battery then? I thought that the 7805 regulates the power for the Snes and screen so I could use a 9.6v battery. At least in Ben's handbuilt Snes it says you can use a 9.6v battery. Well I did find a fairly loose ground so I'll resolder it and I will see if that does anything, and if it doesnt I will buy a lower voltage battery.

I got one...although its a crappy Ni-Cd. I'll see what it can do

EDIT: I just tried it and it works! Well, the video does...but the audio doesn't yet. I'm having trouble soldering the left and right stereo to the Snes chip. As of now, I'm just going to charge the battery fully before I use it for testing.

As for audio, be sure to solder the three headphone wires together on the PSOne screen or you'll get no sound.

Hehe thanks turbo :D After getting sound I decided to rewire those darn capacitors for a flatter board, but I think some of the wires were short when connecting them, and now I get a staticky noise for audio and no video. I think I might have rewired it wrong...if I did im going to make the wires longer so I know its soldered correctly in the holes. I think I had the polarity right too and the uf numbers. I'll check in the morning.

Double and triple check! It should work if wired correctly.

I just like triple checked, and I have it in the right order and all the negatives and postives are connected in the right spots. How would I check this with a multimeter to see which ones might not be working? I don't feel like redoing the whole thing because I'm lazy..but I probabyl will have to.

EDIT: I started redoing the capcitors and when I got to the 2nd one, I realized the end to the capacitor wasn't connected properly so I took off the electric tape, soldered it, and now it works again. Word of advise "don't put electric tape on something until you know it works"

Sorry for the double post, but now I have the capacitors, controller, and screen wired correctly. So far all the hardware modding is done, except I might possibly do the LED mod. If I did it, I think it would be fine to use the same ground I used for the DC jack on the SNES right? Well here is a pic of everything wired and playing the best Zelda game ever...A Link to the Past :D

Great job, Mink! Looks good so far. May I make a recommendation before you case it, though? Do the lockout chip mod on gamesx.com and order Terranigma. If you like Zelda, Terranigma will blow your mind! Amazing story, great battle system (real time), etc. It's incredible! It may even be better than Chrono Trigger.....

I read a thread on that probably created by you...what is it? Is it like a Zelda game or an RPG? I may try it on an emulator to see if like it..thats what I do with most old school games before buying them

Well, it's like both. It has the action-packed, amazing battle system of a Zelda game, but the incredibly deep and involved plot of an RPG. Amazing game, you really should try it. It was never released in America, though, because the plotline is very religiously influenced, and it was thought to be offensive to some Americans, and possibly too deep for the American target audience. It's basically like Zelda+Kingdom Hearts (minus button mashing) for action, and Chrono Trigger+Final Fantasy VII x1000 for story.
