lame. You can already get surround sound with normal stereo headphones. Ever heard of holophony? Basically it's like a hologram (fake illusion of a 3D image) but in stead a fake illusion of 3D sound. The way your ears are able to tell if sound is coming from behind you or above or wherever is by your brain being able to gauge the tiny time difference between when the sound hits each ear. You can make your own 3D holophony recordings by sticking two tiny microphones in each ear and recording in stereo. When played back through stereo headphones it will also play back with the same tiny time differences and thus a sound that came from behind will still sound like it's behind you when played back (but only if recorded properly and played back through headphones).
Gimme a sec and I'll give a link to an example.

Another word for it is binaural stereo. You don't actually have to put microphones in your ears - you can use just microphones spaced and aimed appropriately. The more accurately you simulate the effects of a real head and ears, the more realistic the recording will be. For example, put the mics on opposite sides of a styrofoam sphere "head". Cover the head with a layer of fabric and a "skin" of latex rubber to duplicate the way real skin absorbs and reflects sound. Add some pinnae (external part of the ear) to give more defined directionality. Etc.

The arguing as to what's in the box aside (matches), were you able to comprehend the sound appearing in 3D space? I played it to my teacher before and it freaked him out.
