Sound wise, it has reminded me of a hard-drive clicking away. It feels like it's having very sharp light seizures. The mechanism is a small long box in the pak that works much like a strong old telephone bell with no bell. Just the magnetic clicker. In MPH, they actually manage to make it "rumble" at frequencies using sound as much as feel. When you're hurt, there's just a sharp click, but the movies that have exsplosions that use the rumble pak and it feels like an explosion.

I personally use the pak as another way to tell me if I'm being attacked. Sometimes you can miss the visual cues so to actually feel the attack makes it easier to respond and, eventually, win.
