Soldering "pro" here

Hi... well I'm not a soldering pro as much as a noob.
I just tried soldering on a circuit board (a nonworking one) and I think I and my dad failed... Anyway I was wondering if I did it correctly, if not, tell me what's wrong.
steps:
this is what I now think we should've done
1) heat up the cb and wire at the same time for about 3-5 sec.
2) hold wire and solder iron in place at around 45 degree angles (keeping soldering iron on)
3) put some solder on the wire/iron/pin
4) put any extra solder on the iron on the wire/pin
5) remove heat and let solder cool alone.
this is what we really did:
1)follow step 1.
#2)hold wire in place and heat solder with iron (moving the iron away from circuit board and wire)

3)transport solder from iron to wire/pin
4)follow step 5
So can anyone tell me if the 1st pair of directions is correct and/or what we should do differently?

edit: oh yeah this was posted in a diff. thread but is a 6 watt 900F iron fine?

i can't verify your steps but here's what i do:

1. tin iron
2. tin circuit board
3. tin wire
4. tin iron
5. put wire on PCB
6. heat it until it melts together

ok I think I changed my steps and got it right thanks to trying it again and watching the solder video

.
But about tinning, is that just cleaning? If so, would you just clean it with a rag for circuit board and a damp sponge for the iron and wire (then dry it)?

tinning is coating it with a layer of solder. you need to wipe your iron every once and a while, but thats not called tinning. dont wipe the circuit board.

wait... so do you hold the wire together with solder but still leave some wire left? And ya, I wasn't going to wetten the circuit board, and I should put solder on the circuit board and leave some of the pin left for the wire to stick to?

ugh... I've seen too many guides, my latest one was this.
I like it but I'm confuzed now...
1) when tinning a wire and cb do you leave some wire and pin open?
So you could still see the pin and wire, but just a bit...
2) does the open part of the wire actually touch the pin? Or does solder transfer current between wire and pin...
