Soldering Iron Help (concerning heat)

I just went down to Fry's to pick up some resistors, when I saw a very tempting offer. An ECG soldering iron for 10 bucks!

When I got home, I reliezed how hot this thing was. I never checked the box till then, but I found it got hot enough to get up to 800 F!

I also saw that it was rated at 60W.

Is it possible to even go near any system with this iron? Or will it fry automatically?

i wouldnt reccomend it........but i used a gun that was hotter than that on my PS1 screen, and it works fine

Goto Radioshack and get one.

Hmm... maybe you could mod it as some sort of vac form tray heater. >_> Since in the process of heating the iron and plastic, it will at one point reach a perfect temp.

if you practice with the 60w iron you should be able to solder connections so fast that it won't have time to fry stuff. that could even make it more practical than a normal iron

I think ~500 F.

hmm a vaccum former? can you really make it with a soldering iron?my 99 cents store has cheap soldering irons, if i get a bunch can i make the ULTRA vaccumm former?

I have a radioshack 100 watt gun but I don't know how hot it's able to get.
I actually use it for cutting plastic stuff not soldering (since it usually ruins pcb's) and it's pretty dang good for that! Most recently (well not most recent, I used it to make a hole for a screen in one of my cases after that but that didn't come out good so you don't have to know about it

) I had to use it to get a dvd out of one of those super thick security cases that can only be opened with some special tool because some bozo at the supermarket put them out on the shelf that way, and then they used the self sheckout..... I have always wondered whether the fumes are OK for inhaling (accidentally of course

) or weather they'll eventually kill me or something.
