Long time, No post. Same power problem.

Post by sydney075 »

Well it has been aa while since I have posted anything here. My job that I took ended up being a dead end one putting old compter systems on life support. Anyways that is more of a forum 42 post so if you want to know about what has been going on you can read my summary at garrage games here.

Anyways now I finally have the time and actually feel like working on my portable n64. the problem that I was having with a voltage drop, read here. Since the time of that post I have led modded the screen and did away with my lmt317 circuit. As I said before I know it isn't the batteries as I have tried multiple sets. I also now know that it wasn't the lmt317 as my new dc-dc converter is doing the same thing. The voltage still drops and confuses the heck out of me. I am determined that the problem must lie in the system itself and I am not about to rewire another one just to find out.

So now I figure the only thing I can do is to give the system more voltage and I think this could be manged in one of three ways. The first I am not sure about is to use an 8.4 battery because I need to check the voltage drop and see if it drops to far. This would allow unregualtion as the lcd and 12v lines would not be overloaded.

After some testing (need to get another battery holder) I may have to use a 9.6v battery. This would be too much for the lcd so I would have to do one of two things. The first would be using a second power switch so the screen could be only be turned one after the system is running. Problem is I wouldn't be able to use the screen standalone to plug rca cables in as I have desgined it.

The last option is the one that I will probably end up having to do. As before use a 9.6v battery and reconfigure my lmt317 to regulate the voltage going to the lcd this would allow me to use the system as a screen or a game system or both. There would be some energy waste but only 9.6v down to 9 so i think it shouldn't affect performance.

So like I said I am going to have to do a little testing before I know what voltage I will need. Just thought I would give an update on the progress of my system.

Double post but two days later so please don't shoot me.

Update after setting the system up with another battery to make 8.4v the system now works. I have an led moded psone screen hooked up to a N64 that is all running off of 7 rechargable AAs. It all appears to be running fine. Also the system has rca ports so the unit can be used as a screen or to output to tv. Now I only have two more major things to worry about before I put it in a case. These are relocationing the cartrige slot and wiring a controler into the system. On top of that I am also considering adding a brightness mod switch for the lcd and a walwart port for external power but those are minor issues.

I'll have to see about some pics but I am using my camera batteries to power the system so I might have to borrow someone else's to do the job.

you don't really need a switch for the brightness mod; once you turn it on you won't want to turn it off :P

Well brightness mod done and while it is real nice it does somewhat wash out some of the color. I'm going to leave the switch on there in case I do want to turn it off but, for most use it will probably stay on the whole time. Next update should come after I get up the corage to tackel the cartrige slot relocation.

Well I have decided on the scsi cable method of relocating the cartrige as I am not that sure of my ability to solder all those wires. Because of this the project is on a short hold until my cable and pinheaders come in the mail. Now for some pictures.

*****WARNING*****
These photos I could not get to turn out well and not for lack of quality of the camera but the quality of the lighting in the room. The pics do not do the lcd screen justice in any way shape or form but, I am posting because anotherperson asked for them. I will try to get better pictures once I can figure out how to light the thing to photograph it.
