I believe the difference is that on GameCube discs, data is arranged from the outside in spirally, whereas the data on normal discs is arranged in concentric rings from the inside to the outside. I could be wrong though, so don't take this for a perfect answer. Can't remember where I heard it, but I think it was on a site where they were talking about GameCube emulation (at 1 FPS)…

That hole is where you dup the GameCube into thinking it's connecting to a server but instead it's going to a computer on you're network. From there you run a program that will pull the info off the games disc. After that is done you can send the info back to the GameCube without the game disc in the system.

well which laser you use doesnt matter, its how the laser is programmed to read the data, therefore you would need everything that the laser is attached to. (this could be what you meant by laser, if so a mod can delete this post)khaag wrote:what if i just changed the laser in a tray DVD drive to the Gamecube laser? would that work do you think?
It is possible to hook IDE drives up to the Gamecube in place of the built in drive, and has been done. It is a complex task however, and not 100% complete yet (audio streaming isn't finished).
If you have the skill to do the mod, go for it. I plan to do the mod as soon as i can afford the parts.
Odds are, even the most skilled modders on these boards will likely be over thier head on this project.

This is simplisticly simple, and CRAZY! but it just MIGHT work....take the CD drive, open it up, take out everything but motor, and replace the lens and crap (as in gut it ALL out) with a GC disc drive....but the depth, that's the problem, nevertheless, with a dremel, you can 'adjust' the tray, I think that's what he wants, and no complecated mods, correct me if wrong
"Life's a female of the dog species, then you die.."
Just refitting the head into a gutted DVD drive would make it a pain to open the tray, IF it worked at all. The GC has no built in code for opening the drive, and without the replacement drives guts intact, neither does it. A simple circuit could likely be made to open and close the drive.
But, the focus of the laser on the disc is at a fraction of a millimeter, changing the laserhead or even just the lense would put the whole device out of focus. you'd have to use the existing laser head and lense in place, and hope the it is compatible with the GC drive's daughterboard. Unless you very confident of being able to refocus the device.
Now, here are a few myth busters.
1. The GC discs do NOT spin backwards
2. The discs are not proprietary (just the filesystem is)
3. The GC drive is not capable of accessing ALL of a full sized DVD if you leave the case off. (the purpose of a custom made drive is to cut every corner possible, including the extra2 inches of material needed to reach the outer rim of full sized DVDs)

not true the idea behind smaller discs was you cant pirate them if you cant make the discsCorscaria wrote: 3.
