however, the survival of the fittest is proven
Why is the do-do extinct?
Why does the lion rule the savanna?
Why does bill Gates live on his own little island?
Evolution, not so much...
saying that man is distantly related to mold just does not make all that much sense to me...
I believe that God just decided to Code DNA so very close in animals help seperate the distinction of man and beast
(for those in the dark scientists are looking for a "missing link" for the evolution step between ape and man)

The thoery of evolution is taught as fact because it is supported by scientific observations. The remains of several primative humans have been unearthed, each one usually deeper and more primative than the rest. The earliest remains are of 'upright apes'.
The engine of evolution is Natural Selection, which has been observed first-hand be thousands upon thousands of scientists throughout the world. One notable example was during the industrial revolution in England. A species of butterfly was prone to a mutation which caused their normally bright color to form as black. When smoke and soot changed their environment to be darker, the white butterflies died off leaving the genetically different black mutations as survivors.
I think religion and science can coexist, really. Perhaps a supreme being did bring the universe into existence and did affect the entire planet in such a way that we developed. However, the moment people believe a religious statement that contradicts science, the people are just lieing to themselves.
Lets remember that, though the bible has been revised many times, it was written at such a time when the target audience was uneducated farmers and peasants. The religious teachings had to be performed in such a way that those people would be able to understand it. Saying that a God formed us from clay is obviously absurd, but it would get the correct message across to people. Telling a bunch of farmers that God influenced the changes of the environment across the face of the planet to cause an extremely long and complex series of seemingly coincidencial genetic mutations until Man was formed....well, that just get you a bunch of dumb, empty stares.

In response to an earlier post of someone, saying that religion is the cause of the world's problems...well, I say it's actually people's fault, not religion. Sometimes we might make use of religion because it is a clear difference, but in the end it's people, who naturally tend to come together in groups (look at society today, and society throughout the ages. Were there not numerous class systems and separations? Racism still runs rampant throughout the world today, and that's another example of people grouping others and themselves, and then fighting amongst one another). Ultimately, it is through our own faults (primarily greed and lust for power) that can destroy us.
As for the creation of the universe: There is a simple belief to it that can appeal both to science and to religion, if you wish. First of all, remember that our universe is governed by mathematical laws, and that, as Einstein said, "the most incomprehensible thing about the universe is that it is comprehensible." How did these mathematical laws come about? Well, they were simply created, long ago. Once again, you could believe that it was by a chance, that out of perhaps a previous universe or void it was created (no one really knows how, yet) or that God or gods created it this way. He would set the universe to act like it does, and from that we would come about.
Now, while I haven't studied evolution for a couple years, I might remember a few things that can make some "believe" it. Yes, it is from natural selection that we evolved. The eye, as an example, probably came from some mutation that allowed certain bacteria or microscopic life form to know when light was shining on it, therefore allowing it to seek shelter or food or whatever easier. This further evolved to come to know shapes, and then could see light as it really is (eyes today
). Now, we must rememberu that this occured over roughly 4 billion years, which is a LONG time for a bunch of mutations to occur. Long enough, I believe, for us humans to come about.
Finally, there WAS some sort of equation that showed if there wasn't any evolution, then we couldn't be here, or something. I can't remember it, I haven't studied biology in a couple years, but I remember it "proving" evolution. Hardly conclusive evidence, I know, since I don't even have what the "equation" was, but look it up (or give me time to do so) and you'll see
.
Oh, and one more thing, actually. For those who interpret the bible literally all the time, quit it. The story of creation was NOT meant to be taken literally, and many times stories are just to show something about how we are supposed to live or how the way things are. The creation account (of earth) was meant to show human's dominance over the world, and that it is up to us to take care of it. The garden of eden story and original sin and all that was to show that at some point, we learned how to sin and do evil, and since then have broken relationship with God. It does not mean there was a talking serpent, who gave a woman an apple and all of a sudden we were cast out.

Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!

The deformatys are cirtanly not a joke. To create a healthy child you need a good set of genes. Now say for example your dad has a bad gene for his eye shape, but your mom has a good gene for her eye shape. Everyone has 2 copys of every gene so that would be why your dads eyes would still be normal even tho one of his genes was defective. When you were concived your moms good gene cancled out your dads bad eye gene.sniper_spike wrote:Incest had to happen, it was the only way to continue life or royalty. Isn't that deformaty thing just a joke?
When a inbred baby is born from a brother and sister for example, there is a 50% chance that the baby will get both bad genes, or atleast ones that don't work as well as they should. This bad eye gene could cause the baby to have no eyelids or a miss-shapen eye socket.
This mutation can happen in any creature, from fish to elephants. It's not just a human thing.
Infact there are plenty of animals that are infact mutations, take a mule for example. A mule is just a horse that is missing a gene pair.
An example of a diseas you can get from inbreding is Von WilleBrandt Disease. It causes your blood to not claut, and is one of the many non-physical deformatys caused by inbreading. Von WilleBrandt Disease can cause people to bleed out and die even from small cut on the arm it they don't take an injection of medicine that clots your blood.
Does this mean that inbreading causes every child to have a deformaty, no. For example prince charles is inbred as heck and he still looks normal.

right *cracks knuckles* i do love a good debate (esspecially religion and politics
To out line my beliefs, im strictly and atheist, or a hopeful agnostic (if there is a god i reckon he'll think ive done ok
)
Organised religion, i dont like it one bit, having belief in a god, fine believe what you want to believe. If i was trying to impose my beliefs on to you, then i would be being hypocritical. Religion is fine, until people start believing too much. It worries me that (i think. im not sure) 70% of Americans would believe the bible over a science book. You cant trust something that was written thousands of years ago. While the bible has some good points on things like morals and right and wrong, dont take it literally. Intelligent design is an example of believing too much, that story was written thousands of years ago, to explain where the earth came from before they had the benifit of scientific knowledge, also it is no doubtedly much hear say and chinese whispers. Jesus fed 5 people wiht fish and bread, same story 100 people later, jesus fed tons of people with fish and bread. You can see how things can easily be exaggerated.
Back to the believing too much, islamic fundamentalist, christian findamentalists, hindu fundamentasilst and any others are all as bad as each other. there is nothing i cant stand more than people who try to impose their beliefs onto you, be there christian or muslim or whatever. Debating and persuaion fine. you must! bad. Also i dislike most modern religions as they are far to dogmatic. If god was that benevolent he wouldnt want us to spend our lives in misery and lack of fun. Also moral codes in society change through time, what wasny acceptable in bible times in fine now. hell even what was taboo even 30 years ago is fine. Times change, the bible doesnt (well that depends if you count all the re-writes,translation etc).
Science im all for, but i apply the same rules to that as i do religion. Never believe something unless there's concrete, in-your-face facts. Theories come and go, what was accepted scientific theory 30 years ago has often been proved to be wrong, and what proved it wrong may be itself wrong and be proved otherwise in another 30 years.
As for the meaning of life, i have two views on that:
1. The Selfish gene theory - procreate, that simple, DNA is just looking to reproduce and multiply and protect itself.
2. My own personal view is have fun. Life's no good if you dont laugh at least once a day, or do something you enjoy. Sure we all have responsibilities (work,school,kids etc) but go out and have fun, do something that makes you feel good (as long as it doesnt make someone else feel bad
)
As for where we go when we die, the ground
There may be some kind of afterlife, no one knows for sure. As an athiest you dont get the chance to say i told you so
an afterlife of 5 minutes just to say "see, told you you needen't bother
)
Also on this topic is the "out-of-body-experiences" that usually occur when someone is medically dead but brought back. I know a few people who this has happened to. But i think its just the brain trying to rationialse the situation and keep it active as the oxygen runs out. Same thing might happen when you acctually die, no one knows, or has come back to tell us

Exactly, I personally beleive in god (as stated earlier), but I too don't like the people who take religion to the EXTREME... They are way too weird. Many people in my church take religion to the extreme. How far? Well they don't participate in halloween (not even the kids)!!! They don't even give out candy, they hate halloween, think it's from the devil er something. What's ironic is that Halloween was made to make masks to disguise themselves from the devil... And they also have many semi-stupid beleives I (and many others) don't beleive in. and anyway...Religion is fine, until people start believing too much.

actually halloween was an ancient celtic holiday that was considered the passage of souls from the dead to the earthgeekbait111 wrote: Many people in my church take religion to the extreme. How far? However the Halloween we know today was a Christian adaptation of that holiday to help win over the ancient celts to christianity
Thankyou Gregorian calander
Oh yea and uhh try this on for size, How could evolution,big bang, and the like happen when there is a VERY SPECIFIC order of which the events must happen? and most athiests i know also believe in chaos theory?
Also, bill gates living on his own little pensulia sorry wrong geographical term
one more thing people are just too uptight nowadays i agree
