my experience so far with the TI dc-dc

Includes but not limited to: SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Game Gear and I guess the Virtual Boy.

That depends. I initially had two 8.4 V batteries hooked up to my system, but when they were fully charged, they were at about 9.2 V. When I tried using them, the screen would get distorted until the batteries had dropped below 9 V. Since I didn't want to have to get a regulator for the screen, and didn't want to drain the batteries down to 9 V after every charge, I cut one of the cells off of each pack to make them 7.2 V.

You should find out first what the voltage across the battery will be when it is fully charged. Mine are Nimh, so I would think that other Nimh battery packs would behave the same, but I don't know to what extent other types of batteries will go over their nominal voltage.

before my screen broke (i don't think the battery broke it) i powered it from an 8.4v battery all the time with no problems at all except that the transformer got really hot. the LED mod fixed that.
