How do you know?

Did 'God' tell you?

I don't mean to sound like an ass, but really, do you have ANY proof what so ever?

Common sense, it's like saying your sorry for something when you're really not.

I've always been curous about morals. We all seem to have them. It's one of the things that makes the average human a human. We seem to instinctively know what's right it most cases. Why? What are common sense and scrupuls?

Luc, I like the whole thing about morals.

Humans have morals. some people let the bad things get a hold of you.

another thing I found intruiging, was when somebody said to me:
"Nobody had to tell you how to lie"
Meaning that we were made into a life of principles and decisions.

I was thinking more along the lines of the average person, not a hells angel who has smoked 90% of the drugs avalable and drinks till he can't feel anything anymore. You know, someone who may have stolen something when they were a kid or went underaged drinking or had periotic fights with their spouce and never really went to church but still went to the ocational mass and now at the end wants to not really repent but say sorry for the things they did when they were younger. Not really as an intirely religious thing, but more or less just a confession so when you do die they have a clean concious.

Well if you believe in the bible and its teachings, the person would have a clean concience beforehand.
"be ready, for no man knoweth the hour that the son of man shall arrive"

EDIT:
Oh ok, I understand what you're saying, yet the bible says:
"no man cometh unto the father except unto me" and to repent and be saved. Not repent every once in a while and go be happy.
And for those of you like that, it also says ""do not be lukewarm". In the passage there (I forget where exactly, darn.) it explains the types of people. the people who believe in god but sin against him are lukewarm, he hates them most. but those who are hot are pleasing to him, and those are the peole who have faith, and are committed.

On a side note, it's also kind of wierd to put that Sci-fi spin on life. Like what if we were other people, or in some sort of contianment or something? Well, i guess I'd leave it to the matrix people. 8)

wow... *blink*, maybe this thread won't get lockied. Even though this is sorta disobeying the rules, probably all the moderators (including ben) have looked at this. And this is a fairly popular thread too... amazing...

Well, the way I see it there are two possibilities:

1) We are NPC's in a forgotten server of some futuristic MMORPG.

2) We are players in some futuristic MMORPG- we are immortal super-humans who have become bored with our lives, and therefor drop ourselves into this 'game' as an infant with no memories from our actuall life. We live an entire life, and then we 'die' and return to our actual lives :P

Ok, I'm kidding, but the idea does make you think. I suppose the problem is that humans can only determine truths that they can see. Any speculation beyond what is observable will always just be speculation.
anyway, who would simply make up the idea of religion just to keep order? it wasn't founded for that reason, it was because of what we felt and experienced.
In the Stone Age, some humans accidentally ingested berries which caused hilucinations. In these hilucinations, people would see things, and then they would tell their fellow tribe-mates about them. In many of the tribes, these visions were used to make decisions. In many of those tribes, the tribe members attributed purely coincidential improvements or successes to these visions, and they decided that some greater force must be talking to them.

Fast forward a few million years. The Greeks and later the Romans were seeing things in nature that they couldn't explain. They decided that only greater beings could possibly have the power to do such things as make the sun rise and cause crops to grow.

Fast forward a few hundred years. The Roman Empire is enormous and supporting a very large population of wealthy individuals. According to historical records, many bored Roman equivalents of aristocrates took up bizarre beliefs or join strange sects in order to make life more interesting. Eventually, one sect appears- imported from smaller groups elsewhere, involving just a single supreme God. In a time of social inequality, this 'novelty religion' promised salvation in equal portions to women, who flocked to it. This religion also offered easier access to salvation to the poor. Furthermore, life becomes a lot less complicated. A follower needn't fear 'angering the gods' and, say, losing a harvest or suffering a drought.

This is all information I have gathered from a wide veriaty of sources, over a long period of time. You all already know how I interpretted it, so interpret it as you will.

Maybe we're sold as pets to aliens who put us on different planets and then they see which ones survive the longest.

That line speaks of the second coming of Jesus, when He will bring up all His children into Heaven, and not death.

I would imagine if your "deathbed confessional" was truly genuine, you would still have a place in Heaven, after all, your not dead... yet.

@Some of the people who thinks this would be locked: Why would it? It's an intelligent conversation held out by intelliegent people, end though religion is being brought in, it's different than telling people what to believe, so I think that this thread's gonna have a long life.

My 0.02$ is that everything has a scientific explanation, including the soul, how the mind works, etc. I also believe in reincarnation and lots of other things that don't really make any scientific sense. I geuss it's just part of being human. Nobody's perfect, so despite how "perfect" you are, something about you will always contradict something else. I geuss the beauty part is that we were "designed" like this (doesn't matter if it's by evolution or higher being) so our flaws mean we're as perfect as humans can get. There are still those unanswered question though, such as, "What is nothing really?" The truth is, it's impossible to be "nothing". There is somewhere you go when you die. Whether it's heaven, hell, or some other dimension. Those elctrical impulses don't just go away... And remember, everyone is entitled to their own beleifs, I for one, am Jewish, and Atheistic. It's part of being human, I can follow both paths. So don't let people tell you you cant...

Wow. Just wow. We could all team up and publish a book disscussing beliefs and existence with this thread. I'm so glad nobody's gone overboard with flaming people or pushing their beliefs on anyone else.

Has anyone found the meaning to their lives yet?

Because the meaning of my life doesn't want me anymore :(

people shouldnt be ur meaning.. because the minute ur not thier meaning, it becomes pointless..

your better off aiming for a successful life than a meaningful life.. one where you are happy (whether it be with work or with a relationship, even temporary ones) and u have enough time and money to enjoy life outside of work and after work.. balance is the only good life..

spending ur life looking for a meaning is worthless.. unless thats what makes you happy.. but prepare to feel unfullfilled when life decides to get off..

oh also, theres only one person that people should believe in (Im not saying faith is pointless, or you should quit or change your faith), and thats the person you look at in the mirror in the mourning.. thats the only person you need to have faith in
