I've made some progress (pictures)

Post by timmeh87 »

i have made some progress! after doing the expansion pack thing, i didnt touch my n64 for like a month. but this weekend ive found 6 or 8 hours to spend working on it. so. heres the pictures i promised:

Image

in this picture from my crap-diddily-appy webcam, we can see the front of the assembly i have created. the whole thing (screen, system, cart slot, soon to be battery) is mounted together with machine screws and bolts - and theres some coat hanger in there too. in the green box you can see part of the expansion pack, with green electrical tape protecting it. in the red, you can see my clever use of some extra metal that was part of the original n64 case. these pieces were used for screwing the never-released n64DD on.

Image

Here we have the rather confusing back view. the green box has the cart slot inside of it, mounted at a 90 degree angle to how it normally is. i used green enameled wire to make the connection, it went very smoothly. you cant see much of the wire in this pic, its very compact. the red boxes highlight the extra metal i added (extra from the metal that came with the system) it comes on a roll and is like a strip of soft steel with holes punched all along its length. i dont know what you call it. this is also what the cart slot is mounted to. its solid. and the blue is the heatsinks.

you can see some flat-head screws on either side, these go through and screw into the brackets that hold the screen on. clever. ;)

Image

and theres what it looks like with the cartridge in.

Image

here i tried to take a 'panoramic' picture of the profile. the blue dimension is exaclty 2 inches. the box indicates the future location of my batteries.

so there you have it. the video connection (composite) to the screen is hardwired, but theres no audio yet, and you need to plug in the stock power supply for both the screen and the system still.

Yay! So it isn't dead after all :)
I wonder if you'll have the same problem as me when you run it off a battery. (Video inteference)

Good job on that. You are the only other person I've seen who is mounting everything together. :D I cant wait to see it done (or even working). If the inside looks that nice, I cant wait to see the case.

yeah the case is still just an idea in my head. i was hoping i could make it out of carbon fibre, but apparently theres a worldwide shortage of that. maybe ill just go with fibreglass. anyways, its not to hard to do either. you make a mould out of foam, and cover it in epoxy and your fiber of choice.

Any set concepts about the size, shape, etc of the case yet? If so, you think you could maybe post a rough visual of what it might look like?

eh. im not much of an artist. basically i was thinking a rectangle to contain all of that, and then nintendo controller grips on the sides.

sorta like that... but more streamlined. and with the handles set much higher. (and n64 style, obviously)

Seconded. It's driving me nuts, and a fix would be awesome.

About 14". It's on the opposite side of the case and I have the case halves side by side.

Looking good by the way. This is gonna be one kickarse portable.

indeed. my batteries are two big things (together roughly the size of a cart), not a collection of many tiny ones, so i cant split them up at all. putting the cart slot in the center facing up just wasnt an option.

looks good so far....but....wouldn't the cart. slot get in the way?

I'd say it'd be good for a vertical layout N64p, but the screen is set up for a horizontal layout. I'm curious to see how you'll get around that ;).

keep up the good work, though :)!
Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!

I thought the same thing that Gamelver did. Although it might be a bit late, you could just rotate the screen 90 degrees. I'm not sure how you could fasten the screen down, though, since the holes on the left side would be a bit far away. This would give you room for the controls, too, as they could fit right under the screen (gameboy style), except maybe for the joystick. Nice job, regardless.

it fits together in my head.

lol. i have a plan, you'll see.

i got the dc-dc converter installed into it. i got it running properly with the system on battery power and the screen still off the wall. unfortunately, my batteries died before i could try the whole thing off batteries. the screen mystery will remain unanswered for another day.
