Go with the CopyNES! That's probably the most accurate NES sound playing device (other than the HardNES).

Again, I am not sure if you guys understand me.

I want to find a way to convert normal songs (without lyrics) to 8-bit music. I now understand that I can't do it by hacking a NES, but does anyone else have any suggestions.

For an example of what I am talking about, check out NEScover, at:

So, basically you want to convert an mp3 or something to play on a nes?
You'd either need to do it by hand or make a fairly complex piece of software to do it for you. Your best bet would be something that would do audio->midi and then midi->nsf. It'd sound horrible though.

That is pretty darn impossible. You could, in theory, do it, but it would just be like, taking a .wav and converting it to 8-bit with mad low sample rates. It wouldn't sound like an NES game - it would just sound like ass.
What gannon said is your best bet, but again, it'd sound like ass.
The NES sound hardware is like, some wave generators and that's it. And it'd be hard to pipe anything into it in the first place. You could probably do what others have said: take your CD-ROM, connect the analog outs to the ports of the NES, but then it'd sound like... a CD.

If I understand you, all you want to do is have have regular songs converetd down to 8-bit quaility. Then have a cd player in an nes that plays the songs converted to 8-bit format. If so then it wotn really work. It pretty much normal music whose quality is just noticably worse (it dosent sound like an nes at all)

You can do that or just put a Linux PC that plays NSFs in the NES, which has been done countless times.

Yeah. Now, if you were a mad awesome VHDL master you could just wire up an FPGA to an ATAPI drive, write some code to do the conversion, and ...
OK, even Kevin Horton would have problems with this. The NES sound hardware just sucks, ok? 5 channels max, and good luck getting good use out of them. I'm not saying that good music wasn't orchestrated for the NES, but it has to be for the NES to be any good, honestly.

Then you will have to invest hours of work into MIDI files in NerdTracker II or MODPLUG tracker to recreate the sounds. It's basically the only way.
