CD-ROM and Microcontrollers

Is it possible to interface a CD-ROM drive to a microcontroller via a serial interface? Either an IDE drive or a standard drive found in a discman or PlayStation. I would read it byte by byte and interprete that into the file system.

Hehe, I don't know if this is what you were talking about exactly, but a thought hit me when I found out my laptop's keyboard ribbon cable fits in where the disc drive goes, and thought a superhuman could plug the keyboard in and type gibberish really fast to, say, install a game to the hard drive.

Lol, I'm talking about reading a CD with a microcontroller like a PIC, PICAXE or Basic Stamp.
