For example, Model 1's had versions with a 2 part glue chip and SCN68000 plus EXT port, 1 part glue chip, SCN68000 and EXT port, 1 part glue chip and EXT port and MC68000 or HD68HC000, MC68000 or HD68HC000 without EXT port, enhanced and non-enhanced VDP versions, versions with and without a resistor tied onto one of the 68k pins, and a late version with a square 68HC000 processor and MD2 style combo chip Glue Chip/VDP.

They can definitely vary a LOT.

That said, if you waned to make a portable from an MD3, it would be much more accurate than a GOAC ... but far from perfect. You'll still have the irriating mono audio and weird random bugs. And it'll run a good bit slower than the real deal (more lag).
So your'e saying Radica has Mono Audio???

NO!!!!!!!!

Also, the Genesis wasn't made to put out stereo sound in the first place. The Genesis 1 only had mono output. Only Genesis 2 had the stereo, and nothing used it. (I am using "nothing" figuratively, I'm sure things did use it, like the 32x and Sega CD.)
That said, the Genesis 2 is probably still the better choice, for the reasons mentioned above. Plus Genesis 3 can't hook up to Sega CD (nor 32x, I believe...)
Um, no. The Genesis/MD model 1 had stereo output at its headphone jack, just not at its AV port in the back. Games DID use Stereo, Sonic's ring sounds play alternating on the left and the right channel, Ecco 2's music uses it heavily, a great example being a sweeping wave sound passing from the left channel to the right gradually in "Trellia's Bay"'s music.

Also, I'd hardly consider the MD2 the 'better' choice since it's slower and less modifiable (most notably, it overclocks terribly in the vast majority of cases.)

So until they make a GOAC that is on par with the Genesis put out by Sega, version 1 of the Genesis is best way to go?

Also as for over clocking the verson 2, what makes it harder? Did they combine the CPU with another chip? or does the video chip just not like having it's clock speed changed?

When did overclocking become a requirement of making portables?
I think the issue is being confused. The Genesis 2 is perfectly fine. It plays Genesis games the way they were intended. The Genesis 2 is better because it has a smaller board, and performs admirably (with no known compatibility issues). End of story.

The idea behind over-clocking the Genesis is to improve game play. Epicenter was on the ScreenSavers and showed how the system can get bogged down just playing two player on Sonic 2. Over-clocking it would be like do a region mod/NTSC><PAL modification used to make it perform better on the go.

I understand that, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it should be on everyone's requirements list. I think that it's good to consider that, but for portables, size is often the biggest issue. Sega released the Genesis 2 saying that it plays Genesis games the way they were meant to be played. It's got a smaller board, and plays Genesis games properly. Therefore, there's no reason not to use it for a Genesis portable, in my eyes.

Of course, if you have the space in your portable for a Genesis 1, then by all means, go for it :) In that case, the Genesis 1 would be great.

I think PAL->NTSC mods are a special case, because the games were mostly developed in the USA or Japan (NTSC countries), so changing to NTSC is just making the games run as expected.

Lastly, there's a device going around Tokyo called the Game Joy that goes for about $30. It's a Genesis clone that has a built-in NTSC/PAL switch and Japanese/Other region switch. It's in a silver Genesis 3 case, but split into two boards that are split like an NOAC. Might be good to use :) I hope someone looks into the Genesis clones that XinGa has too.
