Hey,

I have seen this site (and others) before, but it was not until I ran across a red Super Joy 3 for a good price that I was inspired to actually build a portable.

I'm planning on using an old Intec Gamecube screen I have sitting around. It measures about 5.75" diagonally and consumes the power to match. Running on the GCN power supply (without the GCN attached), it runs at 12V, pulling around 580mA at the most (sitting around 560mA on average). I've also found that the Super Joy 3 uses 6V at 50mA.

So, basically, I need a battery that can run both of those for at least 3 hours. Of course, price is an issue; I'm only building this unit because I have most of what I need sitting around. Also, it’s a plus if the battery can be left in the unit while it charges (just have a charge jack on the side).

Thanks a ton for the help! I'm sure I will have a few more questions before this project is complete.

Welcome to the forums. If I were you, I would do the led mod on the screen. This way you will have a longer playtime.

Wow, 12v for a screen :shock: ... you should just sell that screen and buy a PSOne screen. The PSOne screen is much easier to LED mod, and it's just better to work with.

So I really don't have many options when it comes to running it at 12V? So far, I've not found any batteries that even run at that.

Yeah, I'm tempted to get a PS1 screen, but I prefer to use what I have. It's actually a very nice screen, large and crisp.

I tried running it on 6V (using some AAs), and the screen still displayed the image, just not very brightly. I'm going to try to put it on a variable voltage supply tomorrow and see how low I can get it before it starts to fail.

Turning off the backlight seems like it would be a major pain. There is a dimmer pot though. I wonder if clipping this pot would turn off the backlight (or it maybe it will just introduce more problems)?
