Perhaps that little plastic piece sits inside the device a certain way, and if it's not sitting correct or it's not there at all they know you've voided the warranty. (Like it matters.)

I was thinking about it last night, and that thought actually came to mind. It's possible. One time I took apart a radio and after removing the screws I had to pry it a little because it was sealed with paint. I think that had something to do with the warranty as well. (well, the radio was from in the 80s so the warranty had probably expired anyways).

Or maybe if you drop the PDA the peice is suppose to slide into place and complete a connection that tells the PDA to stop working to protect the electronics.

The electronics would stop when you dropped it without the piece, if the electronics needed stopping, it'd still work.
