Man, I'm so high...

Wowoow.. Just thinking about portables is making me spin. Honestly, the thought of doing something you're not supposed to be doing (taking a stationary home console and mucking it up) is enough to make my mind wander on and off.

Heck, the whole process is a joyride.. seems like a joyride, that is. First, you plan what portable you're going to make and select the materials necessary. Second, you gut your console and make it nice and compact. Next, you add the controls and wire up what needs be (battery and etc). Afterward, you transplant a screen and finally, design the case. This IS a hobby!

I've been visiting Ben's site for about five years now.. I remember reading the May(?) 2001 issue of EGM and saw the blurb on top of one of the pages displaying his 2600 Rev. 5 and I thought, "OGMA THIS GUYZA GENUYS' Being twelve only added to the excitement, because I knew at the time it would be a bit harder for someone young like me to pick up on the skills to do what Ben "pioneered". How do you shrink something that's about as big as a sheet of paper into the size of a GameBoy? I read and read and read to find out the juicy secrets, but I was too scared to knife open any of my consoles.

Well, the wait is over. I'm ready to make my own portable. Expect to see another SNESp sometime in the future. I have over twelve years experience with this system--playing it! Back then, for me it was a time when "kiddy image" had no relevance at all and I could rent Kirby Super Star five times. I got lost in the myriad of levels in the Donkey Kong Countries. I couldn't get past that one cave bomb-boss in Super Mario RPG before I had to return the game.. Those were the days. Now, I can't seem to squeeze the same amount of enjoyment from the current generation of games.

A crash course in Portable 101 from Ben's book oughta teach me the basics and I'm sure I can count on you guys to back me up. I'll be the envy of my friends. That really pushes the effort, dunnit now? I'll take a SNESp to a PSP anyday. It's amazing what a year or two's difference can make between people and console generations. The freshmen at my school are probably more in tune with the PSX and N64, but they may have a little GEN/SNES experience. On the otherhand, I have a chunk of SNES tales, with some NES ones in there also. Today's kids are in love with your PlayStayshum 2s and Xcubes, but they haven't experienced any 90s' (or 80s' for all you 20+) love. I wonder what the effects of taking a firstgrader and raising him on 16-bits of power will do.. Then again, I probably don't give enough attention to the other forefathers of modern gaming--your Ataris and your .. your.. Ataris.

Don't worry Ben. I'll get an Atari someday just so I won't have to eat my words!

This is perhaps one of the toppermost rewarding DIY projects out there. The fun involved just makes it so. It's definitely enriching my interest in electronics and potential future career in the field of.
