Pinout/wiring for newer SuperJoy 3 NOACs

Post by the_werle »

I'm new to the whole modification scene, but am planning on taking my Superjoy 3 and hooking it up to work with my original NES contollers. Ideally I'll be mounting it inside the spare space in my original NES case and having both the old school parts and the NOAC running.

However, my SuperJoy's pinout and PCB don't match those found in G-Force's stickied thread, and I was wondering if there's a good place to go for a pinout and general FAQ for getting started on modding with these newer, different Super Joys.

Probably your best bet would be to buy/make a continuity tester, or a multimeter with one built in. The use it to trace the wires and see where they go.

I'm an Electrical Engineering Student at Purdue, so I have a multimeter and can do it the hard way if required.

Hopefully someone out there has already done the legwork for me though.

Mine has quite a few differences between it and the one in the sticky thread though, as is evident by the pictures. For example, the ribbon cable connecting NOAC part of the board to the controller board has 13 wires instead of 12, and both boards layouts are entirely different.

I imagine the pins for the famicon slot are the same, but everything else probably won't work.

I'll try testing and figuring out stuff myself I guess, and will try to keep my notes in a way that they'd be worth sharing.

You should able to trace back the pins for power and A/V, so your only problem would be getting the controller to work, but the controller is already attached, so the pins are already connected.

Thank God for your post, the_werle! I am currently following ladyada's game grrl instructions, and I was going nuts trying to find out why the heck my system wasn't working. Screen was working, but I just wasn't getting anything from the NOAC. I was checking everything I could think of... and then I saw your post about 13 pins instead of 12 pins. Sure enough - I had one pin too many. Must have missed that on the first count... Here's a copy of what's written on the backside of the P1 board by the ribbon cable:

Image

Okay, so now for a couple of questions of my own:
1) What's VDD? Following the trace, it seems to connect to one leg of a transistor (says "8050" next to it), connects to the player 1 glop, and then goes to the player 2 controller. Going the opposite direction, the trace goes a little switch right next to the ribbon cable with a label of "SW2"
2) Pins #7,8, & 10-13 are all player 1 and player 2 connections, right? If so, I can figure out those connections.
3) What is pin 9? It's the one labelled either "OUTC" or "OUTO". On one side of the pin, the trace connects immediately to the player 2 controller. On the other side, the trace winds its way around to the player 1 glop. I'm guessing this is another controller connection, but I wonder what the abbreviation stands for...
4) Does any of this match up to what anybody else has? If so, then I'm willing to let this pinout be used for whoever wants it... maybe on the Portables of Doom site... (As a sidenote, I bought my SuperJoy III from the powerplayerusa.com website - it had a blue controller and a silver gun, if that helps identify it any...)

Anyway, that about sums up the questions I have for today. I've been trying to get this thing to work for the past couple of days (when I get a chance to work on it...) and it's just not cooperating. I'm using a hip gear screen, exactly like the one ladyada used. At least the pins to that match up...

Edit: Long post - I know... But I hate double posting. Here's some of pictures of the top and bottom of what I got...

Hey that is labeled almost exactly like the Yobo! I've already figured out the Yobo, so this will be easy:

1. +3.3v
2. VDD = +5v
3. Video
4. Audio
5. Ground
6. Reset
7. P2D4 = P2 Purple
8. P2D3 = P2 Blue
9. OUTO = P1 and P2 Latch (Orange)
10. P1D0 = P1 Data (Yellow)
11. P2D0 = P2 Data (Yellow)
12. SCK1 = P1 Clock (Red)
13. SCK2 = P2 Clock (Red)

Wait a second.... This is exactly like G-Force's pinout in the sticky, it just has an extra wire of +3.3v which probably lights up an LED or something. Just ignore the +3.3v pin and follow G-Force's Guide.

The labels are underneath the grey ribbon cable on the controller ports board of the Yobo.

Thats cool... The pinout above matches the red colored superjoy 3 that I bought from gannon. I guess they like to keep them all pretty much the same.

Dangit!!! I'm going nuts. Even though we've established exactly what the pins are, I can't get the thing to work. After checking everything I could think of, it still will not cooperate. Hip Gear screen working just fine, just no signal from the NOAC. To narrow the hunt for what I'm missing, I tried basically putting the SuperJoy III back together again and using the original AV ports to connect it to my TV. However, it's not working. The only thing I know that I'm not hooking up in the right spot was a thin yellow wire connecting the two boards together... I have no clue where that thing went at the NOAC end. As for the controller end, it went into that little hole (above the word "select") next to the "sw2" switch by the ribbon cable. The trace goes to that switch and... I don't know. As for where the other end of that yellow wire connects, all I know is that it connected to the other board :( I'm looking at the possibility of an inadvertently fried board...
