We need your system specs before we know if it is a compatiblity problem.

Who makes your system(HP, Dell, etc.) what is the model number. I will look up the specs myself and find out what might be incompatible.

Just for gits and shiggles, I downloaded the Ubuntu LiveCD. It boots fine on every computer in my house from a Cyrix 120 junker to a Sempron 3000+ laptop. So if your computer falls somewhere between 1995 and 2006 it should work.

Nope, I need specifics.

Just give me the model number off the case and I can find out everything I need.

I need a model number so I can find the exact specs on the board like chipsets brands an models.

For example my mom has a Compaq S3030RK, the Compaq site tells me it has:
Athlon XP 2000+ 1.67 GHz
VIA KM266 motherboard chipset
VIA VT6103 network chipset
Realtek ALC650 sound chipset

If there aren't drivers on the CD for these devices it is not going to work. So if I know more about the computer it lets me know why it might not boot.

Also, you still haven't said what exactly happens when you try to boot the Ubuntu CD.

Now we are getting somewhere.

You have Nvidia Nforce2-IGP chipset which is well supported. I have a Nforce2-MCP(better sound and no onboard graphics) and have no problems.

So, it isn't likely to be a compatiblility problem. Everything should work including sound and networking. You have a Nvidia based graphics chipset so that should be no problem.

What happens when you boot the Ubuntu CD?

I assume you got your CD images from here:
http://mirror.mcs.anl.gov/pub/ubuntu-iso/5.10/

You are using the "PC (Intel x86) live CD" image right, not the "64-bit PC (AMD64) live CD"?

The AMD64 one is only for Athlon64s not the XPs, the Intel x86 is the one that should work.
