is there any easy way i can make a usb headset out of regular headphones and a computer mic by just switching the plugins with a usb one?? i dont want to spend 40 bucks for a ps2 headset if i can make one with what i have

you'll have to at least get a USB headset, I'm afraid.

i guess i was mistaken..i thought this forum was all about creativity and innovation in modifying and portablizing gaming systems, not having to resort to buying things especially when you can have that feeling you get when you made it. i know i could buy a headset somewhere and dont need a forum to tell me that, but it would be useful if i could get some information about the actual connection between the usb plug and the headphones/mic so i can at least attempt something

Well see theres this thing called we don't know how to do everything suprising I know but true we just can't do everything you want us to so try to figure it out yourself and if someone else knows how great if not then you've got to figure it out!

exactly, we are portableizers, we don't know everything about everything electronic. when it comes to something like this, buying it seems to usually be the least expencive least frustrating and most efficient way to do things. you could google around for a guide but I don't think that it will be very easy any way you slice it. it will need some sort of IC because it is usb it has to have something to tell the ps2 what it is doing, it will also need some sort of bios or firmware or driver or something so that the ps2 ralizes that it is a headset and not a driving wheel or mass storage device. this= hard.

oh by the way gamelver, every time I try to use the tags it makes a broken link. but I do try

well in response to LG64's post, I'd say that it's one of those things that can be done, but not easily, and not without spending more than just getting a USB headset.......it's not just a matter of connecting a couple wires to the USB port, I'm sure.

Correct. USB uses a very specific protocol that can not be emulated in any easy way. The USB headset for the PS2 actually converts your voice into digital data before even communicating with the PS2. If it used a simple analog interface for the headset, like the microphone port on your computer's sound card for instance, it would be as simple as connecting a few wires. But it's USB, and the PS2 only has drivers for the chip used in the headset. Therefore, the only way to have the PS2 even recognize your homebrew headset is if you had the exact chip used in the USB headset, and were able to reverse engineer the entire PCB. And since it's a headset built exclusively for Sony by Logitech, the chip is probably custom manufactured and therefore imposable to obtain for the average civilian.

You can, however, buy a used/broken headset off eBay, and wire your own headset, or speaker and separate microphone to the volume control box. This is what I had to do with my headset, because my puppy destroyed the cord going to the headset from the volume control box. I wired up a cable, which I then plugged into a small amplified speaker I had laying around. I can hear now, but I canâ€™t say anything because I didnâ€™t have a microphone to wire up to it as well.
