 it's making a humming noise?

is the nintendo itself making the noise, or it just making a humming noise on the tv?

are you using the RCA jacks or the coax cable to hook it up to the tv?

Wow how much was the NES at Goodwill? Did you see any NOACs there? I'm taking a trip down there later this week to check and see for myself, but I was just wondering. Hmmm a humming sound... Is it just humming or can you hear SFX and music, too?

try using the coax and see if the humming goes away, if it does you're at least narrowing down the problem

You can also get an RCA-F connector like this and use any regular coax cables you might have around the house. Conversely, you can often find the opposite (take an RCA cable and find a coax end to it), like what is available here.
I'd recommend the converting of a coax to the RCA plug the NES needs, because that's generally higher quality.
Hope that helps!

sock,
It's the power adapter you are using. I've had the same problem. Get an original Nintendo power supply or one more suited for the unit. The humming will stop.
