A question on Benjamin's Hand-built SNES...

Includes but not limited to: SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Game Gear and I guess the Virtual Boy.

A question on Benjamin's Hand-built SNES...

Post by King of Bling »

I have read his book, but I am still not sure whether there is a port to plug in a pair of headphones or whether there is a 2nd player port.

Also I would like to know if there is a shop to buy all the things like PC boards, battery chargers and LEDs which is more convinient for someone living in the UK.

Thank you.

I think one of them had a headphone jack, but I'm positive neither of them had a 2nd player port.

As for things like PC boards, LEDs etc... I don't live in the UK. Best bet would to ask around/look around(phone book may help) your area for shops that have that kind of stuff, otherwise its online shopping for you.
SNESp - 100%
Protable X - 15% - I need money :(

Is the 2nd controller port of the board close enougth to an edge to possibly include one, as it would be quite dissapointing if I can't play Super Mario Kart and Kirby Superstar without someone to play with me.

Also how long does a good set of rechargeable batteries run it for?

The SNESp does not have a headphone jack :( in bens book, nor does it have a 2nd player control port. It would be fairly simple, however, to extend the leads on the 2 player control port to the corresponding slots on the mini SNES board. One problem though; all of Ben's cases leave absolutely NO ROOM to rewire and insert a second control port, so you'll just have to make a custom case if that's what you are looking for.

EDIT: I do NOT recommend doing a hand-built case from ben's book; if you cut the plastic wrong even down to a fraction of a centimeter, it will not work. You should probably do a custom case and use the original SNES control pads instead of using tact switches and pc board.

SUPPLIES: RadioShack, Digi-Key, and Mouser all ship to the UK (i think). Just type in the company name.com.

I found a place for the handbuilt! In the battery pack it will stick out a bit but should work.

ya but that would require physically tearing apart the P2 plug-in to re-configure the angle of the leads and take off the excess plastic... I personally wouldn't even waste my time with ben's hand built case. It is VERY pricy when you factor in everything when you can feasibly make your own case MUCH cheaper and more custom. Plus, you wouldn't have to mess around with making a new internal control board; you could just use the original SNES controller board!

EDIT: If you don't want to make Ben's case, but are still skeptical about making your own, a project box is a great alternative. They look amazing and professional, and are readily available. Here's a link-

From radioshack:

This one is really nice. The only possible problem I could see is fitting the PSOne screen in there... Anyone got the dimensions on that thing? Gutted tackle boxes also work nicely.

Ya a hipgear would work unless you are a noob at this stuff then you may want to just follow ben's directions on the screen... Hey metroid (or anyone else) did you see Totokan's xbox 360 portable crap? no way!

Thanks everyone. But seeing as this is my first portable I think I'll follow Benjamin's instructions.

I had the idea of instead of cutting away both controller ports, I leave the 2nd one in and make a hole in the side of the casing. Seeing as right now I have neither the case nor the SNES (in the mail), I have yet to find out how it actually works.

Trust me, unless you do CNC case or you are a robot that can cut plastic perfect every time, MAKE YOUR OWN CASE!!! I followed all ben's instructions, but now I am having to build my own case because his didn't work... It's actually much easier and more rewarding. If you do end up doing Ben's case, though, make sure that you cut the engraving plastic (or ABS, you can use either one) a bit bigger than the tempelate, or else the electronic components won't fit! :D

By the way, are you using an American SNES? If you live in the UK, shouldn't you use a European SNES? Unless, of course, you have all American SNES games.

EDIT: I almost forgot! you could just buy the case from Ben. That way you KNOW it will work

Yes, I am buying the case. I think I will use it as it looks quite appealing and I really doubt I have the expertise and equipment to design my own.

I am using an American mini SNES and getting all my games from America, firstly because as you know the mini SNES wasn't relesed in Europe and secondly I'll miss out on games like Super Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger and Earthbound.

On a side note, does the Super FX or Super FX 2 chip drain the battery life faster as I am planning on getting Yoshi's Island, Star Fox and Doom which all have one of those chips.

Cool! Are you buying the radioshack case, or a different one? I really don't think the super fx chip drains any battery life, but I haven't tested really. I'm pretty sure it doesn't though, because it's voltage requirments are the same as a normal SNES cart.

EUROPE DOESN'T HAVE CHRONO TRIGGER?!?!?!?!?!?!?!  :( that is really lame Europe doesn't know the joys of playing the best RPG... no the best game ever?

You'r confusing voltage with amps.

Th more current (amps) running through your circuit, the lower your battery life.

Voltage is how energized the current is.

To answer your question:

Yes, it would drain more battery life, but you probably wouldn't even notice it. It's nothing to be concerned about.
Hey, sup?
