Can the C64 from that Hummer game save directly to its memory using the BASIC "SAVE" command? Any word about this? Furthermore, is the entirity of the C64 version of BASIC available with this thing?

I am SO getting one :P

As far as I know from reading, you can SAVE but it only stays in the internal RAM. There doesn't seem to be a way yet to fave to flash RAM.
Also, it appears the whole BASIC program is there in the ROM - you just have to prompt it on boot up (I think you hold down Tab.)

Yes, you can get into basic by hooking a keyboard up to it (which is pretty easy) and holding down the tab key when you power it on, looking through some of the source code for the hummer, I found that you can also get into basic by holding down the ctrl key.

save doesn't work well, you can't really save to the flash, and if you hook up a disk drive to it, you can save to the disk, but it will use more space than it should, and is often corrupted. This can be fixed by patching the kernal, but the current version of the software to patch the kernal is buggy on the NTSC version of the game, I'm waiting for the next version of the patching software to come out, which should be soon, and will be fixed.

I just finished the audio hack for this, no pictures cause it looks identical to how it did before, even has the same resistor in the same place. There's one resistor that is bypassed on the pcb, you have to remove the resistor, cut the trace that is bypassing the resistor, and solder the resistor back in place.

Anyone wanting exact directions on this can go here.

This wasn't the hardest thing I've ever had to solder, but it's pretty close. I'm going to have to think hard about actually doing the video mod, I'll probably do it in the end, but I'm going to want to have a bunch of spare resistors on hand.

To give you an idea of how tiny these resistors are, it's about as long as a penny is thick, and it's less than half as wide, and only about as thick as 3 sheets of paper stacked on each other. I knew exactly where I set the one I took off and still had trouble finding it again when I needed it. It's pretty easily mistaken for a bit of debris on your workbench.

I do have to say that the game does sound better with the audio fixed, I was kind of suprised, it's a lot less harsh sounding.

Only thing keeping my from going out and buying one of these things at this very moment, is that the time is 11PM at night, and I'm also extremely lazy.

I wonder how hard it is to do the mmc mod I heard some people talking about.

Whats the difference between that tiny resistor, and a normal one, and if there isint any, then why not replace it with a bigger one?

What information did you find on an mmc mod? the mmc mod that I've been looking at is still in development with nothing to show yet.

The only difference is the size really, but a regular resistor just plain wouldn't fit where small one is. The small resistor is about 1/30th the size of a regular resistor, it's really, really small. There really wouldn't be much to solder a regular one to. The small one is surface mount, so it solders to just a small pad, there's no hole for pins to go through

Then hook up the regular resistor to some wire.

that's more work than it's worth, I'll just stick to being really careful with really tiny resistors

That hummer thing doesn't have the contacts for a cart slot, does it? Cause if it has them I'll be looking at that thing. It will be a hell of a lot easier to solder a cart slot on and get the IDE64 Compactflash adapter then to have that Compactflash > Disk drive adapter that was posted.

And now all I have left to add is... the game is on, who will build the first Commodore laptop?

it wouldn't suprise me if there were contacts for a cartridge slot, but I havn't run across any information indicating that there is. you can get a schematic (that is not exactly correct, but pretty close) and a programming guide here

The Commodore 64 was the best gaming computer in the 80's and early 90's. It was a computer so it could do all the things an 8bit computer could. The reason everyone is excited about it is that it rivaled the Atari computer in gaming and program software, well that and the fact that it's a signal chip so it's small and can be portablized easy.
