N64 Overclocking ( Older Matte Black Model )
Has any overclocked an older n64?
I have read that if you do, that it if:
'Using a black model will work, but they tend to freeze anywhere from 15-45 minutes into gameplay.'
Has anyone experienced this?
If so, any suggestions of the cause? Overheating perhaps?
Or is it what was suggested:
'..the black models have older motherboard revisions in them, which makes them unstable.'
I'd rather ask around before I perform the modification.

I did this to my old black one, it was pal tho it worked great and I was running it for about an hour at a time. Oh but a word of warning: use hot glew or something to keep the pins strait after bending them up or they will fall off.
RIP n64 you were a good friend and now you are dead

I couldn't tell you what the revision numbers are yet.
I have the following coming in the mail. All from ebay auctions:
3 N64 Systems (2 working, 1 shuts off after 15 min(overheat?))
3 Power Adaptors
3 Controllers(1 working, 2 with loose thumbsticks)
2 Controller Thumbstick Repair Nobs
2 RF Cables
1 Rumble Pack
1 Memory Card
1 N64 Carrying Case
3 Games:
MLB feat. Ken Griffey Jr.
NBA Court Side
Goldeneye
The total came to something like $70 with shipping.
Anyways, when I get them in, I'll post more info.

I wonder if this would work:
according to http://www.geocities.com/robivy64/mod_page1.html , the multipliers are in this fashion:
Pin # 1.0 2.0 3.0
112 GND GND 3.3V
116 GND 3.3V 3.3V
What would happen if instead of feeding 3.3V to pin 116, you fed 1.5V-2V?
It might have no effect(digital circuit reads as high or low, nothing else), but it may be worth a shot if it has some analog components....
Also, maybe we could try to limit the current going through the overclocked components somehow...
If you are looking for what is overheating, try looking at things connected to the 3.3V line. The 7.2V line has a 7805, which limits the current, making those components less likely to draw excessive current. Maybe if we used an LM-type package on the 3.3V line...

Well, I got the unit in the mail that would reset/quit after 15 min.
It turns out that it had something spilled inside of it. ewww.
The rust/corrosion is creating bridges in the circuitry.
Any suggestions on a good cleaner. Good idea to be dielectric right?

I'd say take one of those scotch sponges with the scouring pad and mix water with CLR (50-50) and use that. The CLR should start working quickly and the scouring pad can help get the think parts and speed up the cleaning.
