My newest project (minor graphics warning for you 56kers)

Post by loup »

This is my newest project that I've been working on. Some of you may be thinking "hey man, go stick this in the proper forum, this is forum 42, not a place for you to talk about your project." Well, I would put this elsewhere, but there isn't a forum here for the Commodore 64.

So, on with the show.

Inspired by a "Hack A Day" article posted the other day, I found myself a cheap and really, really boring to play hummer racing game

What is so special about this dumb little game? It's core is a Commodore 64.

Image

I added a molex connector to connect it to the 5v and ground on an old AT power supply

Image

I also discovered that the power switch actually cuts ground rather than power, therefore, if the game is grounded in some other way, it will turn on by itself.

I found some information on attaching a PS/2 keyboard (you know, a regular computer keyboard) to the game in order to access a command prompt

Here's a PS/2 port I harvested from an old computer motherboard
Image

Here's a pic of it with the PS/2 connector connected to the game
Image

and a closeup of the PS/2 connector with the keyboard connected

And, if you hold down the "Tab" key when you power the machine on, you get an actual command prompt

I even wrote myself a little program, it went something like this:
10 print "hello"
20 goto 10

Not having a start/stop or reset button I was then forced to restart it to make the program stop :)

The game has a built-in flash chip that is writable, unfortunately, the kernal has a bug and has trouble saving correctly. But, the kernal can be patched to work correctly. from what I understand, the current utility to do this doesn't work quite right on the US version of the game, but the next version should.

My next step is to add a 1541 floppy drive to it, and if I'm feeling brave, doing a video and audio mod that will improve the quality.

It is small enough that someone could make a portable from it, it's about the same size as the hacked down atari 2600 board, but I would think doing something similar to Ben's Atari 800 laptop would probably be the most productive portable.

This is cool...i could definatly see some sort of laptop come out of this. BTW, i have those same orange-top black screwdrivers....i love em :P

hehe, did you post this on Radioshack.com?
These things can be modded as they run Commodore BASIC. There's a way to hook a keyboard up to one to run the BASIC interpreter.

Have you done the video quality mod? It seems to make a huge difference, the link is also on the hackaday page.

I havn't done the video mod yet, from what I understand I would need to patch the kernal with code to set the video properly for it to work properly after doing the video mod, unless I actually wanted to run a half dozen commands every time I started the thing up.

I'm going to wait till after the next kernal flashing utility is released to patch the kernal, after that I'll look into doing the video mod. It does make a big difference, but the resistors are tiny and will be tricky to replace

The shack has it for $20. For that price, you should try to get a DTV (I think I got mine for $15) with some real games.

Hmmm, I haven't played my DTV in a while, I should do that :)

I'll be honest with you - I would have never guessed that.

Wait a second....this is an actual, fully function PC(on a chip- sorta- and yes, I know its just a C64)? And it runs a version of BASIC!? I must have one!!!

Ok...Am I just demented or something, because I can't find my way to the actual full article on Hack-A-Day, just the little blurb...

It also has a ROM you can flash. The original (DTV) is cheaper, but no flashable ROM.

In the UK there's a DTV 2 with a bunch of games on it and has all the same great features of the hummer game, and it can even be set to NTSC by inputting the correct commands, the only problem is that it's set to PAL until you set it to NTSC, so good luck there.

Speaking of this, does anyone else know of an good pseudo-computer-on-a-chip's available? I wanted to stick with x86 compatable stuff, but now I'm less interested in that.

Well, this is a commodore on a chip, but assuming you want something more powerful than that you could look at anything with an ARM processor. Still won't be terribly powerful, and will require something like ARMlinux for an OS

Actually, it isn't that hard. the instructions are already provided, so all you have to do is use them. I've been looking at that and was thinking about making a nice C64P, like the atari 800 laptop, then I decided it isn't worth it.
Shhh! I'm not officially back yet.

There's not a whole lot in the line of step-by-step instructions for this, but all the information is there and it's not too hard to figure out :)
