To ben: seeders are people who keep downloading the file after it is on there computer to upload it to other people. leachers just download it and exit the program, not the way bittorent is supposed to work.

so have a 3gb file on bittorrent and then say maybe a 700mb-1gb file on POD.

As for video format? Don't ask me. I have no idea.

3GB? Let's not go too crazy. And certainly not THAT big (700-1024mb) of a file for HTTP downloads. POD is going to lag down like hell with so many people downloading. 10kb/s download if you're lucky.

I'm sticking with BT.

@bic: Sufficient network security? I have 2 firewalls running (hardware and software), both of them allowing BitComet (my favourite client) full access to the internet. I still haven't gotten hacked. Kazaa and those other P2P networks are where you really get owned. Hackers go for the noobs, and most of them are using P2P (instead of BT).

How about this? I'll export a short segment of the movie as Microsoft DV, then give you guys the link to find it on my server.

You can then play around with recompressing it to your heart's content. While it will only be about 5 seconds long, you can just multiple to figure out how big a 90 minute movie would be using your compression method.

Whoever comes up with the best method for 1) a 1 gig version and 2) a larger version, can just let me know and I'll get the compressor and make the final web version based off your settings.

I'll let you know once it's up..

Since it's not small, download it only if you're considering hosting or converting the file. Find a good data rate for this clip, multiply the size by 540 and that's the size of the movie.

This clip contains a still shot, heavy motion shot and panning shot, for a balance.

heh, what a coincedence, i just downloaded vlc for my compaq yesterday casue my other dvd program didnt work, great prog! watched 6 episodes of excel saga in a row with nly slight video lag on a 500mhz comp

Here's several different versions with several different settings. There's also an Excel spreadsheet there for reference. (guide.txt has the same info but it's a bit messier)

I think 3.mp4 looks exactly the same as the source file.

i still say there should be one low quality vid for DSL and dialup people (~500mb is reasonable,less would be ok too. 640x480 30fps or whatever)

Xvid @ 749kbit/s video and Microsoft ADPCM at 386kbit/s audio encoding

Clip size is 1.43MB
The size of the full 90 minute flick would be ~770MB

I was actually kind of suprised by how well this turned out, I don't see much for artifacts, but it's kind of hard for me to tell with that small of a clip

(I was also watching it on my laptop which doesn't have the greatest screen, suppose I could have watched it on my desktop or tv)

I find you have to sort of trick Xvid to work. :\
When you enter the file size into the calculator, make sure you look at the bit rate, to get the bitrate you want, you have to make sure this displayed bitrate is 1.4361300075585789871504157218443 times more than your wanted bitrate. (I made the mistake with the last video, I made everything work so that the output would be 1330kb/s, I ended up with 880kb/s).

I wanted a 1330kb/s bitrate, so I set my target size to 2339 kilobytes, which makes the displayed bitrate be 1910kb/s. The bitrate ended up being 1328kb/s. Hehe.

Other Xvid configerations:

Anyway, this file is close to perfect (video size wise).

5400/10=540
540x1.91=1031.4mb
1031.4/1024=1.01GB

Make sure who ever judges these has a really nice moniter. I had to look at my first entry on an "Ultra-Sharp" Dell LCD before I could tell that there was MAJOR artifacting on the still\first scene. Maybe my moniter just sucks...
