.... Using a Macintosh SE/30! I was looking around at vintage macs and found this site. According to the administrator/author its primaraly run on his SE/30. Tells you what you need to set up the server.

I'm thinking of getting an SE/30 just to do that. After all who would hack an old computer running macOS 7 or the website, it just would be worth the effert (let alone who would know how to hack it to begin with?).

Sounds nice

I already run my own http, ftp, and proxy server and they work pretty good. The only problem is getting around your ISPs blocked ports and any bandwidth limitations.

Your thinking of OS X, the earlier versions were completely different form any other OS out there.

As for Gannon's post. Have you thought of asking your ISP to split your upload and download (thats the term TSS used) to get the upload the same as your download in speed.

No, infact, my isp sucks. But I do get 128kbs up and "supposedly" 3mbs down, although it's more like 600kbs down.

Damn that sucks, but I take it as you live in the U.P. you have little choice in who your ISP is.

I know he mentioned switching to DSL instead, so he has that much choice at least.

Yeah, it's either crappy cable, untested DSL, or aol

The problem is that if I switch to dsl and find out it's worse than my cable connection, I'm gonna get stiffed with around $25 a month more for my cable internet bill.

you could find out what kind of speeds people around you get, and maybe try calling the DSL supplier and see what their average speeds are. Really, could it be much worse than what you are getting? My slow DSL would get that kind of speeds, before we upgraded.

Well when ISPs sell bandwidth, they usually use megabits and files are commonly measured in megabytes. so that 3megabit connection is 3000 kilobits, then divide by 8 to get the kilobyte measurement, and that gives you a 375kilobyte/sec connection. so i think 600 is high in your case.
(unless you already know the difference between bits and bytes and are saying you get a 600kilobits download speed)

yeh ive seen that site, as well as the mac plus server, mac classic server, color classic server, and LC475 server.

im currently hosting my website on my old iMac.

you also seen the gameboy advance server? or the single microchip server?
