heres my 1/50 dollar

you should find one of those company's that help finance projects like this and set up a direct stream from the premiere that includes not only the screen but the audience to give us the ability to see how they enjoy it...

i also think not hosting thios on POD would be good...i think that you should publicise it more than just one neishe website...publishing it somewhere mainstream will get a better reaction...

Here's how the video should be done:

1.First open up the original video (must be AVI or MPEG1/2 video) in Vdub mod and go to File>Save as WAV.
2.Open up this new wav in FFmpegui, and encode it as 2 channel AC3 at 192kb/s and with a 48000khz sampling rate.
3.Go back to Vdub mod and go to Streams>Stream List. Disable the existing one and add your new AC3.
4.Go to Video>Full Proccessing Mode, and then Compression.
5.Use the Xvid codec, double pass and set at 1.4GB target size.
6.Save the AVI now.
7.Open up the new AVI and follow this guide to cut the AVI into two files:

Now you have a typical Bittorrent movie (Trust me on this stuff, I do a lot of *cough* encoding and *cough* DVDs).

Skyone mentioned bittorrent, and you may want to concider it if you're planning on going with a larger file size. I personally would recommend encoding it in either xvid or divx, and if you're truely after dvd quality, around 3GB is a good target size (you can go quite bit smaller and have it still look really good.) For bittorrent, this wouldn't be a problem.

The only problem with bittorrent is that you may be narrowing your audience a bit, as not everyone uses bittorrent or even knows how to use it. Also, 3GB may be a bit big for some people.

One solution would be to offer a larger, dvd quality version for download via bittorrent, and offer a smaller, maybe 700MB version for download directly from another site.

However, should you go this route, you are kind of losing control of the distribution to an extent. You wouldn't be streaming the video, you would be just giving out a copy of the video that people could do pretty much anything with. If that's not a problem for you though, then it's probably about the best way to go.

I've been downloading episodes of "The COmputer Chronicoles" from archive.org (good show; it's fun to watch stuff about the Commodore 64, Apple II, and early DVD players. It was made from '85-'02). The best-quality MPEG2 files are roughly a gig apiece for 25 minutes worth of video. It takes about 8 hours to download at 33k/s.

I suggest a few versions of the video if you want to let it be downloaded:

Small MPEG4 for quick downloads or dial-up users
Medium quality DiVX or MPEG4 for broadband users or very very patient dial-up users
High quality MPEG4 or MPEG2 or DiVX for broadband users

Of course I assume it will be released on DVD like the other movies...

I'm going to try re-encoding the trailer into several different formats and pick out a few good-looking ones. If anything I suggest keeping away from proprietary codecs like Windows Media AV and RealPlayer, because not everyone has those programs. (And VLC Media Player won't read WMV version 3 very well)

Portables of Doom doesn't have unlimited bandwidth anymore, though it used to be. Even then, we have a ridiculously large amount (see servage.net if you want some exact specs)

Personally, I'd like to ask for a MPG file, since it plays just about anywhere

i would download up to 700mb but that takes a long time on dsl! probably 7 hours or better, mebe a 2-400 mb divx or xvid movie or something for dsl users and patient dialuppers

Listen, if we get up a torrent and with a good amount of seeders, the DL speed could easily reach 300kb/s. Only around 80 minutes to download (a 1.4GB Xvid).

Open the ports 6881-6999 in your firewall\router (open your listen port too, if your using a client* that has one), and open the client* to internet access through your firewall. Bam, problem solved.

*bittorrent client (program) eg. Bittorrent, Azerous, Bitcomet, etc.

some of you are talking avout dvd quality like this is some pristine picture filmed on hollywood calibre equipment and digitally processed for maximum picture enhancement. i have a feeling the finished product is actually slightly below typical "dvd quality". not that that is bad or anything; im not saying that the the quality is crappy - just that making this into a 3gb file is incredibly excessive, considering you are going to try to distribute it online.

1.4 gigs is probably pushing it too. and i dont think theres any reason to split it into two files, if someone dosent have a dvd burner yet, then splitting the file can be their problem. in my opinion, this should be done with divx, because thats a nice, universal standard (some dvd players even can play it thse days - mine can!), and should end up being about 700mb. most of the movies i have downloaded (not many. maybe 6) are in this format, i think it works quite well. besides. offeing a less-than-perfect quality version encourages people to go buy the real dvd

as for bittorrent, if you dont know what it is, then maybe you should just google it and find out. it is very useful, and i have never seen better transfer rates or reliablilty from a filesharing system. for those of you who dont torrent yet, check out some software called utorrent. its got some cool features.

and i would be willing to seed as well, i think i got about 60kBps upstream for what its worth (stupid ADSL. i think we're getting cable soon)

[and if youre behind a router, you may have to forward ports (harder) or set up a DMZ (easier)]
