man...no one needs me anymore, i always come in too late to the good questions. Anyway, technically it could be an RF coil (or choke)...just depends on the type of inductor he used

im pretty sure "rf" referrs to 'radio frequency', at least thats the only context i have heard it used in. and it is indeed true that radios (especailly old AM sets) use inductors to tune in to a frequency (in which case, i suppose you would call the inductor an "rf coil"). however, i maintain that the use of the term in this situation is not exactly correct. i do also admit that it might have been slightly nitpickky of me.

haha, i know what RF means, sheesh. But "RF coil" can indeed refer to the grade of inductor he used, it just means that they have a reduced series resistance and lower capacative effects so they can be used at high frequency. If you really want to get picky, you only get into the "RF stuff" when the physical length of your component is greater than about 1/10th of the wavelength (L > wavelength/10). That's when you have to start taking into account transmission line effects, reflections, standing waves and all that good stuff where the regular old voltage and current laws dont apply. I doubt his DC-DC converter has that high a frequency though!
