pn64 power shortage

Post by sunjayc_99 »

Okay. My PN64 is finished, and there's only one problem.
The backlight on the Gamecube screen that I'm using keeps turning off.
I'm pretty sure that it's because it's sucking all the juice out of the batteries.
On a full charge, The screen's backlight stays on for about a minute.
Can anyone help me out? :?

Sounds like there's a problem with the backlight itself. When the backlight cuts out, can you tell if the screen is still displaying anything? If you toggle the power does it work again?

Yes, the screen is still working even though the backlight cuts out.
If I turn the screen off then on again, the backlight stays on for a few seconds before cutting out again. A few times though and it doesn't even come on.

Normally I would suggest probing around the board to make sure everything is getting the right voltage/current/etc, but since it's the backlight you'll probably want to stay away from it (the inverter puts out very high voltages). You could still check for shorts around it, but your best bet is to either try and find a replacement for the CCFL, or as daguuy said, try and replace it with LEDs.

What's the LED mod? And how will it help?

basically what you do is replace the backlight with LEDs. i would recomend more than 3 though, anywhere from 4-6 should be plenty bright.

I'm surprised that nobody's mntioned this yet:

Isn't there something in the portable screens sticky about this?
Something like "....If your screen powers up and then goes blank."

A part of the screen needed +5V going into it.

I'm fairly sure that's only on PAL screens. Maybe you need to short the emergency fuse?
