cdrom compatibility

is the cd rom assembly from the old big gray models compatible with the newer white ones? are the plugs compatible?

I actually just tested this a couple days ago. Seems to be completely compatible. I started up Tony Hawk 2 and played it for a few moments, no problems. As far as extended period of time, who knows. But I'd assume it'd work.

I might actually end up using the older drive because it's got a longer ribbon cable on it. And I'm not sure I trust myself enough to remove it and switch them, like I believe Ben did in one of his.

i think playstation just uses a standard 2x cd drive (if there is a standard, i don't really know much about these

)

I wouldn't do it. The old gray PSX lasers are known to wear out after time. Mine did this and I had to do the old "flip it on the side" trick for it to work again. I also heard that adjusting the pots can fix this, but I haven't tried it. maybe if you get a newer version PSX they might ahve fixed this. I dunno.
Just keep that in mind. It might give out on you.

All you'd need is the longer ribbon cable from the big PS1.
I thought the laser problem was caused by moving the console while it was running?
