Depends on the amount of RAM you've got in it. Don't bother if it has 32 megs, run a minimal system on 64 megs with a fairly large swap, and go right ahead if it's got 128+ megs of memory.

(It's a P2 300, 266, or 200. system specs)

Try Vector Linux or a hard drive install of DSL Linux. Maybe Slax Popcorn edition if your hardware can take it. I'd recommend against using a distro that uses Gnome or KDE on that hardware. (I think both require at least 90 some-odd megs of RAM to boot up anyways... maybe and probably more...)

Vector has the option of using a somewhat more complete environment, but if you use DSL 1.5 you're stuck with FluxBox or IceWM, the latter requiring additional downloads. If you use 2.1 (the latest stable release) you'll get the option of Fluxbox, JWM, or IceWM if you download the MyDSL files.

Once I get a bigger laptop hard drive for my P3 750 laptop I'll dual boot it with SuSE 9.1 and XP.

Please give specs on your computer.

Though if it is a up-to-date computer, like 3 > years old, most distros will work. Me I'm partial to SuSE, and am running SuSE 10.0, Gannon is a Fedora fan, and I'm sure we have people here at like Ubuntu and Debian.

Really linux is based on what you like. If your a Windows person, used it all the time, I'd suggest SuSE it's not that much of a change and has most the software you'd need/want. If your looking for a learning experiance into the Unix/Linux way Fedora is a little better then anyother. Power look to Debian. All well rounded Ubuntu, I've heard from a lot of people that's a great distro.

For a beginner I'd recommend fedora or Ubuntu since they have the 2 best package installing systems it seems. Ubuntu can't compile sources right out of the install though.

Ah, I'm guessing you have not seen YaST, SuSE's installer. Trust me, you can't get any better than this thing. (well, there are still dependencies, but that's common with any Linux distro... at least YaST will try to fix them as possible.

windows is sucking (no virusses or anything, it just sucks) so i want to dualboot win2k and suse 9.0. does the installer have an option to dualboot or is it more complex than that?

Same with Ubuntu's gui apt-get manager. Auto compiling and dependency fetching.

First of all, I'd use something newer, prefferably 9.3 or even Opensuse 10. As for your question, I believe that it does duel boots by default. you may want to double check the partition setup when you get to it in setup. And, as always, back up what you have in Windows first, just in case

Damn Small Linux is known to run on a 33MHz 486 DX with 16MB RAM with sufficient speed. It'll work on an SX, but not as well.
Warranty-Voiding fun!

Most distros come with a bootloader, it will replace the windows one in your MBR, but really Grub or Lilo are better.

I've got Deli Linux to work on my Toshiba. Only problem I've come across is FreeX86 doesn't start but you might have more luck.

DSL is a good choice but it might not work, just be prepared for that.

DSL should run well. Just remember that you should have 128MB ram to really make it fly, and at the bare minmium 16MB ram.

Any current distro will work. I would suggest Fedora Core 4, SuSE 10.0 or Ubuntu 5.10, all that would work good on your system. As for duel booting, you need to partition you drive (use knoppix or the distros should have a utility), and as I said they all come with Lilo or Grub.
