For most people their favorite team never gets in, so they have to choose which of the competeting teams they hate the least (Kind of like voting) It's usually the team that beat their favorite team the least.
Then all of a sudden they start rooting for these guys for the first time of the year. On a similar note, my favorite movie of 2005 (Sin City) didn't get nominated for anything, so I don't give a damn who wins the Oscars.
