Well, my little Mac OS 9 is running out of hard drive space to put all my .jpegs .rms and .avis (and for the record, all those media types, plus a few more, belong to one major type of media <.<; ), so I think its about time I got me one of them new-fangled external USB hard drives that seem to have become so very very cheap. So,
1. Anybody recommend any good and/or dirt cheap external hard drives?, and
2. Out of curiousity, how's everyone else's hard drive space doing?
Running out of room :(

You better be sure what you get is good with OS9, I helped a friend back up his hard drive for switching to X using my dad's external hard drive. Problem is, the hard drive didn't work with OS9, so we had to put stuff on my thumbdrive, then put everything on the thumbdrive onto that external drive via my laptop. Pain in the butt, I tells ya!

i have 330 gigs in my best computer, about 230 of that is free, but im starting to move all of my movie files (tv shows, dvds, etc) onto that one. theres 40 in my laptop (half full) and 40 in the computer i recently got for free (fresh install of windows MCE last night). then, the worst computer at my house has an 80 gig thats also about half full. all of my music is on that one.
anyhow, if its just a lot of porn you have taking up space, why not archive it to dvds?

Well I hadn't considered archiving, however on a Mac OS 9 (with no CD burner, floppy drive, DVD drive, etc.), I really doubt I could do that. Also, again it's a classic Mac, incompatible with pretty much all video formats except .mov and .mpeg and .rm (I have only a couple .avis really, but they're only FMA episodes that I can bring onto the school computers). Most of my hard drive is devoted to my giant doujinshi collection (consisting mostly of black and white .jpegs). So yeah, a lot of .jpegs.
You should use xpostfacto to put some version of osx on it. What kind of mac is it?

You should definitely think about a hard disk upgrade. (unless you've got an old CRT iMac, then it may be time to upgrade the whole thing I guess...)
But if you don't want to bother upgrading the internal drive, go with an external USB 2.0 or (ideally) FireWire hard drive enclosure that will accept a real 3.5" IDE HD. You can then stick a huge hard disk into it.
Just a tidbit of information: With software patches, the first couple versions of Mac OS X can be installed and run on Macs as old as the 7500 and 7600! (mid-90s, roughly equivelant to a P3 200 PC.) Amazing but true! Well, not that amazing when I have installed XP onto P2 366 boxes before...

Uhh...what the copulate are you talking about.limpport wrote:Whatever you do, don't get an external hard drive. You have to wipe them clean of viruses almost every hour to avoid losing your data on it. That's what I hafta do with mine
1. An external hard drive is the same thing as a regular hard drive, just plugging in using usb or firewire. Its so the same that you can rip it out of its casing and use it as an internal.
2. If you get viruses almost every hour you're a very crap computer user.
