Thats the thing, emulators do use ALL of the available speed and ram. The problems with emulators is they have to create the system they are emulating as well as run the game. Thats why it's hard for a PSP to run SNES emu even at 333 mhz because the PSP has to create a copy of a super Nintendo. Store it in it's memory and then run the game off this fake SNES.

Now the N64 and PS1 were something like 64 mhz processors or something to that tune but when you try and emulate them you need at least a 400mhz if not 600 mhz machine. In fact my 800 mhz Laptop can barely run N64 games.

Well if the PSP can't run a emulator of a system who's clock speed was only about 15MHz then it's either bad coding or the system just is terrible at emualtion.

As for the PSone and N64, the PSone has a clock speed of about 33.3MHz and the N64 is about 93MHz. The fact the GP2x can run N64 games is likely the fact that the Emotion Engine was based off the ARM CPU design so you don't need to recode or perhaps emulate as much.

As for the PSP, if it can run a PSone emulator there is something wrong. They both use MIPS chips and so should have some compatibility in processing code.

Well I'm useing the 2.6 emu for PSP that was just relesed 2 days ago. The 1.5 SNES 9x runs really well even at 222 mhz. You have to remember with 2.6 emu your running GTA in the background. Now it's nor running much but the fact is it's still running.

The rule of thumb seems to be that the device needs 6 to 8 times the prossesing power to emulate things well.

For SNES the device needs around 100 mhz and thats why a GBA with 16 mhz can't run SNES roms very well at all. Infact SNES on a GBA just sucks.

It runs ok on a DS without sound but its rather slow and thats because the DS is 70 Mhz.

A PSP runs at normal speed WITH sound and transperensys. Sound, as anyoneones whos done some work with handheld emu, takes a lot of prossesing power to do.

In terms of a PSOne at 34 mhz requires around 250-270 mhz showing why PSOne emu is very slow on a a PSP and GP2x but not imposible.

In terms of N64 at 93 mhz it will prolly take anywhere from 550 mhz to 790 mhz to run it. Thus making it almost imposible for a N64 Emu to run at anything but 5 fps.

The bottom line is emulation sucks. It sucks up prossesing power like nothing else and is generaly only used because it's easy to get roms.

The best way to play old games, like the legend of zelda: the orcarana of time for example. Is to port them. If you did that you would easily get smooth gameplay easily similar to that of a real N64.
