OMG! PSONE SCREEN DISCOVERY!

OMG! PSONE SCREEN DISCOVERY!

Ok, so i was really boared so i felt like tapeing Nintendo Oldschool Revolution...to make a long story short....i looked at the power cable and it said 6 Volts....so i'm like...well if 5 volts lights up half of a psone screen....then 6 must light up atleast all of it....so i plugged it in, and pluged in my xbox into it...and there i saw.......HALO 2! My screen....it's running almost flawlessly on 6 Volts! The reason it looks bad is cause i used composite......(im working on rgb)....but hey, i never knew the screen operated on 6 Volts. Is this new, or am i just an idiot!?

wait...um....what adapter is this? where are you plugging the 6V into?

have you tested it with a multimeter to see if it's really 6V? they can sometimes be a little higher, by accident.

anyway, the psone screen can't run off 6V, since that wouldn't power the 7805s.

I think I'll point out, your AC adapter is not putting out 6 volts. 99% of ac adaptors are unregulated, so the voltage they output varies widely. it's probably anywhere from 5-16v, depending on your house voltage.

For example, the SNES adapter says 10v but it is actually anywhere from 9-14v.

Also, the bigger the load on the transformer, the more the voltage will drop. So you always want to measure voltage output when under load.

So, you're lucky you're not frying your screen (it could be 12v who knows)

exactly :P. which is why you gotta check when using some random ac adapter ;)...I had a 12V one output 16V! no way I would use that for, er, whatever the hell it was I needed 12V for :P.

Yup. Tried it with 4 alkaline batterys myself before, dosn't work. That sure would be nice though...

About AC adapters, one said 12V on it, I checked with a multimeter, 20V! Maybe because there was no load on it, I dunno. I've had a LOT like that, very few actually read what they say.

harshboy, I would say your Ac adapter ouputted around 7V-8V because once the screens input is below 7V, it won't run. Above 8V and it gets distorted. So it had to be isomewhere around that.

I've tried 7.2V, 7.5V, 8V, and 9.6V, and on 9.6V it was distorted.....Ben used a 9V battery (not an alkaline one ;)) on his PS2 portable, though.

I've never tried tried 9V, but I have tried 9.6 and I got distortion. I can't see how .6V can make that big of a difference. Maybe ben had a regulator for the screen?
I just rembered reading that it could only take around 8V before it wacked up. Might have been right, might not have. Anyways, I wouldn't go any higher than that or it seems like you could risk damage to the screen.

yeah, 10-12V would definitely be pushing it, and that 6V adapter could've easily been 12V :|....well, at least you didn't fry your screen, harsh :P.

wait, could you aactually use a 9 Volt akaline battery!? The rectangels one!? I would suppose you could but it wouldnt power very long would it?

it would either not power it long at all or not supply enough amps to power it at al. BTW, my psone screen works great on 8.4v. havn't tested it with 9

I think 9V li-ion double capacity rechargeables typicaly hold around 400mAh. (batteryspace.com)

I suppose if you wired 6 or so together (or however many you want) and used a switching regulator to drop down the voltage and thus (I think) increase the current, you'd ahve a decently good battery!

the PSOne screen needs at least ~7.2v to operate. The main chroma encoder has a 7.5v VCC and this is the main reason for the screen's 7.5v input. Everything else can run off 5v but without the chroma encoder there's no point.

I have the same battery(labeled 9V) as Ben used in his PS2p portable, and the PSOne screen works just fine on it. I just hooked my multimeter too it, and at 3 charge lights out of 4, it measures 8.99Volts.

yeah...i have some Camcorder battery...and i tried it and it worked.....it looks like Ben's battery...but it's not.....Still Sony tho...I might use it...i tested it on full charge, i got an 1:20 (1 hour, 20 min)out of it! Pretty good for a 12 year old battery :shock: i suppose it will die soon.....

do you know the draw on the chroma encoder? perhaps a step up converter could be used to supply the 7.5V needed by that, while everything else runs off 5V.....

an LDO regulator could then be used for 6V batteries or something ;)...
