removing n64 cart slot / expansion slot.

Includes but not limited to: SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Game Gear and I guess the Virtual Boy.

Hi Jeff,
I applaud you for undertaking this... you're not the only one who didn't get the cart slot right the first time. It took me THREE tries to get my slot wired right (first got the row mixed up like you did, second used bad wires, third one stank anyway)

Just make sure you get your wires on tight and look carefully for solder splatters or bridges.

Just don't give up. If you need any more assistance that's why we're here :)

ok ok ok..
what?

I was wondering. This is the N64 board.

Now, do you solder the cart slot into the middle pins, the outside rows, or both? I had been trying this also, and I was a bit confused. I thought itwould be both, because where the golden clippy things originally were, they touched both the middle and outside.

So where do you connect those pins anyway?

EDIT:
This is how I have them connected currently.

You connect the pins directly to the outside rows, since the middle ones don't go anywhere unless you have the extension port underneath them.

yeah, the only reason i did a wiring job like that (im assuming youve seen what i did) is because i wanted to use a pin header, and it would only fit into two adjacent rows (for obvious reasons). if youre going with wires soldered directly to the board, you dont need to do that, use the outer rows.

but, since you have it wired like that now anyways, consider using a pin header and a connector. that way, you dont need to have the cart slot dangling all over the place while you do other work on the system.

Guys,

Is it OK, that my wires are connected to the inside set of holes on my mother board for my cartridge connector? Thanks.

Jeff S

edit: Also how can I be sure that my cartridge port is facing the right way? Thanks.

Not ok. Those are nothing but holes to hold the cartidge connector pins. You need to connect the wire to the outside rows of pins.

There should be a little white arrow on the front of the cart slot, make sure matches up with the arrow on the motherboard.

Also, I've been getting the same crap. The LED goes on, but no video; the cart slot is stock, no fuses have been blown, and I've already tried the removing the jumper pack trick--many times.

Ok but is it Ok to connect it to both? thats how I have it wired, I only removed the expansion slot, and wanted to put the area flat, Not to relocate the connector. So it would be rather difficult to only connect it to the outer.

Does the screen "flip"(fast white jagged line) when you turn on the N64? If it dosn't then theres a fuse on the video (and audio) line that you might want to test. If it's broken I see no problem with just jumping it.

Sure you can connect both, but you don't need to. I know what you're talking about, I've done the same thing to one of my N64's and it worked fine. All you're doing is removing the jumpers, and making a more solid (better!) connection. One thing though, you'll need a HOTTT iron for melting some of those ground pins! I'd be in trouble if not for my adjustable temp Weller iron.

Basically those middle holes are for nothing but guiding. None of them are even connected to anything. nintendo likes weird, hokey designs for some unknown reason.

I don't remeber the screen ever "flipping," but I also could've sworn that I tested the fuses tracing to the video and audio and they were ok. eh? :(

I thought those fuses on the board were caps :?....
Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!

Look on the underside of the board; there are 3 black surface mounted fuses labeled "Filx*" or something.

Hi guys,

I just noticed that the outer rows have 2 more holes (towards the middle) than the inner rows have. What do I do with those? Thanks.
