I myself like anime, if you don't that's fine. I am willing to say that most american dubs suck (especially the dub of shin seiki evangelion I think), and that most anime showed on american tv also is fairly crappy.

i kinda put anime into 2 catagories #1 is the americanifyed crap they mostly have on tv here (cept for the anime unleashed and aduly swim shows) such as pokemon and that tripe. its overdone and stereotypical and mostly sucks then there is catagory 2 the cool shows with good plots and storylines that are really intended for older audiences (probably the 15-30 group) i like anime but i never watch it >.< no time and only dsl connection, them 200mb episodes kill me

I'm not sure I'd say the dub kills it all the time, or even most of the time. Things such as Cowboy Bebop had great dubs, and I've only seen like one TV-shown anime that had an unacceptible dub, One Piece.
Its shows like One Piece, in which the dub was horrible, and the actual footage was cut up so badly, that give the whole genre a bad name.

And I think its kind of false to say that anime is risque. To see a piece of animation that is NC-17, you have to actually be looking for it. Something such as hentai isn't just going to jump out at you on the 5 o'clock news, and thus make you lie in bed for hours, awake, thinking of the atrocity you saw. I think its also false to say that anything you see on Cartoon Network, or where ever else, is worse than what's shown on pretty much any other station. I mean, christ, watch MTV and you can see some rapper with his 'lady friends' who are more naked than not.

I'm going to address issues in this thread chronologicly.

Fanboy, shut up. How many times do we have to tell you, you're not a mod. Don't try to be one.

Those of you that don't like anime. I can understand, english dubbing is utter crap most of the time. Also the stuff they bring over here has the misfortune of being brought down to a level lower then the intended audiance. Dragonball Z for example was ment to be for teens and young adults, no 10 years.

They also grab any thing they think will sell, which happen to be flavor of the month bull. Really the only animes I'm glued to are Fullmetal Alchemist and Ghost in the Shell SAC 2nd GIG. Both have a more mature audiance target and you'll likely enjoy them.

Beyond that the only thing you can do to find an anime you do like is just to look at some reviews and see what interests you. Animex.com has a nice big review section. Or do what I did for a time, randomly download according to title, I wouldn't have found Vandread otherwise.

I'd home this clearifys things for you all or give you a better understanding of why much of what you see has the tendence to suck.

Disclaimer:This is opiononated and their for before anyone flames me read this It's true about good and bad anime naruto great in jap. and good in american then their are studio ghibli films like Princess mononoke and spirited away. I really like those shows even though in america they are funded by disney and if you think they are kiddy then watch Princess mononoke, it has swearing, blood, gore, older themes and is a reletivly ok american show. Just my 2 cents.
