I take offense to anyone calling Latin a 'dead language'. Sure maybe nobody actually speaks it, but do you realize it is the root of every single Romantic language (French, Italian, Portugese, some English) etc.

Not just romantic languages. Many more too. I wish they offered latin at my school.

Latin is the base of many languages, but it is one of the most worthless classes offered at school. Assuming that my Latin class follows the accepted national curriculum, you spend most of the entire first year learning the declensions, conjugations, and tenses of verbs, and not much vocabulary. Is there any reason to learn Latin grammar? No. Is there any reason to learn Latin vocabulary? A little. I can see how some people would benefit from Latin by learning a few new words, but I have actually used my knowledge of English words to figure out what Latin words mean, not vice versa.

Also, many Latin words appear similar to English words, but they don't have similar meanings. This can cause major confusion. A much better alternative would be a straight vocabulary class, where you are taught root words, prefixes, suffixes, etc.

Latin is dead and mostly useless.

Nah, it's been around in church till at least the second vatican counsul (sp?).
Yeah, it's useless mostly, but, 'it makes you look cultured' according to one of my teachers. The first year is almost entirely learning how to decline nouns, conjugate verbs, and other grammar-ry goodness. Then, maybe i'll learn something usefull.

the current Code of Canon Law (rewritten in 1983) was written in Latin, and then translated into many other languages.

Ofcourse it's not dead... The Roman Chatholic Church still use it, I hear more at Christmas mass then any other time.

As for learning it... I'm not discovering any new plants or animals so I really have no purpose to learn that, oh and I don't plan to join the preist hood.
