If I made a N64 portable...

Post by benheck »

...I'd probably want some advice from you guys. I've never actually taken one apart but I know it uses a couple different voltages.

So, fill me in! What stuff, pitfalls, problems and things should I keep in mind?

PS: It'd be cool to do because the DS is basically just a N64p, isn't it? (But with NEW OLD games to buy!)

Here's what I know:

The chips should be heatsinked, or at least some of them
The 12 volt line has a 7805, so it can use 7.2 or more volts
the 3.3 volt line has a lot of draw to it (an amp or 2 IIRC)
the mobo is actually pretty small (an inch or 2 wider than a cart square)
it'll look awesome done by you
you made the N64 forum, yet you put everything in F42

I'll be honest with you - I would have never guessed that.

The hardest part of a n64p is the joystick in my op. It's the thing that really stops them from becoming ultra thin, that and the jumper/ram expansion.

Ben if you do make a n64 portable you should put the Zbutton above the R button sort of like on the nintendo gamecube and i think you should build another clear case accept this time make it 100% transparent that would be so awesome and take off those cartridge doors that close when you take out the cartridge.

I thought the N64 didn't have RGB? If I recall, the original SNES did, the new SNES didn't and then N64 didn't either.

But I could be wrong. If I did this I'd probably use the PSone screen (of course)

The 3.3 volts takes a lot of juice, eh?

AFAIK, only some models of the n64 are rbg mod compatible.

yeah, only some models can be easily modded to have rgb. Also, last time I checked the draw on the 3.3V line is ~1.5A while the draw one the 5V line is ~500mA. So unless you use a dc-dc converter or seperate battery packs, the portable would draw ~2.5A @7.2V

I have a feeling Ben might have to buy another DVD player battery then. The only thing else not mentioned is the on-board ram, you can use the standard one easy but to make the N64 thiner you'll have to sand/cut off a lot of the ground thats above it.

Isn't there a guide for that at Gamesx.com?
